ITHACA, N.Y. -- The fourth-ranked Cornell men's lacrosse team used five goals by David Mitchell and held off Dartmouth, 18-9, in Ivy League action Saturday.
The Big Green held an early 2-1 lead when sophomore Tim Daniels (Cockeysville, Md.) scored off a feed by senior Alec Hufnagel (Scarsdale, N.Y.) before the two switched roles less than a minute later.
But Mitchell scored his first of the game with 10:21 remaining in the first, and the Big Red took the lead for good on a Derek Haswell goal seven seconds later.
Mitchell scored the next three before Dartmouth freshman Brian Koch (Rye, N.Y.) got the Big Green within three, 6-3, at the end of the first stanza.
Cornell built a 9-5 lead at halftime, and in the second half; the Big Green couldn't close the gap to less than a four-goal spread.
Haswell had four goals and three assists for the Big Red, who outshot Dartmouth, 46-37. In the nets, Cornell's Matt McMonagle played the first 54:05,making 12 saves, before Kyle Miller came on in relief. The Big Green's Pat Marshall earned six saves.
Daniels led Dartmouth with two goals and one assist, while Heritage had a pair of goals.
The Big Green fell to 4-6 on the year and 0-2 in the Ivy League, while Cornell is 8-2 overall, 3-1 in the conference. Dartmouth's next game is Wednesday, April 19, when the Big Green hosts Yale at 3 p.m. on Scully-Fahey Field.
