HANOVER, N.H. - Dartmouth's baseball team trailed 5-0 after five innings of play, but rallied late against Vermont to earn the non-conference victory, 6-5. Junior Andrew Nacario had the game-winning single with two outs in the ninth, and freshman Raymond Allen went 4-4 with four singles to lead the Big Green offense.
Vermont (8-26) broke out to a 1-0 lead in the second when Bryan Rembisz scored on a single by catcher Dan Hale with one away. The Catamounts upped their lead to 5-0 when right fielder Kyle Brault hit a grand slam to deep right center with one away in the fifth.
The Big Green began to chip away in the sixth with a pair of unearned runs. Sophomore Jason McManis (Flower Mound, Texas) reached on a throwing error by the pitcher, then advanced into scoring position on freshman Johnathon Santopadre's (Vacaville, Calif.) foul out behind the plate. He then scored on a double by junior Will Bashelor (Bozrah, Conn.). Sophomore Damon Wright (Dallas, Texas) made it 5-2 with an RBI groundout.
Dartmouth (16-15) knotted things up with a three-run eighth. After Santopadre reached on a single, sophomore Jason Blydell (Nahant, Mass.) laid down a perfect bunt that hugged the chalk down the third base line for a single. Bashelor then reached on a throwing error by the shortstop, which allowed Santopadre to score and Blydell to move to third. After Wright was hit by a pitch to load the bases, senior Tommy Myette (Parrish, Fla.) drove in Blydell with a sacrifice fly to center. One out later, Allen (Longwood, Fla.) hit his fourth single of the game to drive home Bashelor and tie the game, 5-5.
In the ninth, the Big Green staged a rally with two outs to win the game. Bashelor started off with a single to the shortstop deep in the hole. After he stole second, Wright was intentionally walked. Myette hit a rocket to the right side that was kept on the infield by the first baseman to load the bases, then Nacario (Carlsbad, Calif.) hit a line drive single to right to drive home Bashelor for the winning run.
Senior Chris Lapointe (Somersworth, N.H.) improved to 2-2 on the season with four scoreless innings of relief. Both wins have come over the Catamounts. Rembisz (1-6) took the loss after moving from second base to the pitcher's mound in the ninth.
Dartmouth returns to action tomorrow for the make-up doubleheader with Yale. The first pitch of Game One is scheduled for noon.
