HANOVER, N.H. - Despite two goals from sophomore Kristen Barry (Duxbury, Mass.), the No. 8 Dartmouth women's lacrosse team fell to No. 3 Duke, 6-4, on Sunday evening at Scully-Fahey Field in the regular season finale for both teams. The Big Green falls to 11-5 overall, while the Blue Devils improve to 16-2 on the season. Both teams will now await the announcement of the 16-team NCAA tournament field on Monday evening.
"I thought our defense played awesome and our effort was good," said head coach Amy Patton. "but we waited a half to feel things out and that is not going to win games at this point in the season. We outshot them, but their goalkeeper had a phenomenal game. I thought she was the difference."
The Blue Devils jumped out to an early 3-0 lead behind two goals from Katie Chrest and one from Kristen Waagbo. The Big Green answered with 6:39 left in the first half when Barry, who was stationed at the left post, took a feed from junior Whitney Douthett (Newtown, Pa.), faked high and then shot to the lower right corner. Barry then scored off a free position shot when her low bouncer found the back of the net with 1:31 left in the period, making it 3-2.
Despite staking the Blue Devils to the early lead, the Big Green held a statistical advantage at the break in shots, 11-8.
In the second half, Duke's Carolyn Davis scored off a feed from Chrest to make it 4-2, but junior Jen Pittman (New Canaan, Conn.) responded for the Big Green when her free position shot found the lower left corner of the net at the 24:04 mark to bring Dartmouth back within a goal at 4-3.
The Blue Devils responded will two quick scores, one by Megan Del Monte and one from Chrest, her third of the game, to make it 6-3. Playing with a three-goal lead, Duke tried to maintain possesion and stall play. Dartmouth was able to cut into the lead when Douthett tallied off a free position shot with 1:53 left, but time ran out on the Big Green comeback.
For the game, Dartmouth outshot Duke, 22-17. In goal, senior Devon Wills (Denver, Colo.) made five saves, while Duke's Megan Huether had 13 stops.
