Winston-Salem, N.C.—The Class of 2010 made a strong debut for the Dartmouth women's tennis team as
Jesse Adler (Chicago, Ill.),
Carley Markovitz (South Pasadena, Calif.) and
Mary Beth Winingham (Carmel, Ind.) all reached the quarterfinals of their respective flights this weekend at the Deacon Classic. Hosted by Wake Forest University, the invitational tournament featured players from Ohio State, Kansas, Indiana, Syracuse, East Tennessee State and UNC-Charlotte.
In B Flight action, Adler defeated Syracuse's Maria Vasilyeva and
Mary Beth Winingham downed Lauren Hommell of Kansas, while Markovitz dominated Ohio State's Ciara Finucane 6-2, 6-1 in the C Flight. Adler was stopped in the quarters by Indiana's Brianna Williams 6-2, 7-5, while Winingham was edged by eventual B Flight champ Christian Tara of Wake Forest 7-6 (5), 6-3. Adler and Winingham went on to sweep both of their back draw matches in straight sets to finish the tournament with 3-1 singles records.
In her C Flight quarterfinal, fellow freshman Markovitz played tough but was outdueled 6-2, 6-4 by Hoosier freshman Alba Berdala, ranked No. 8 in Spain. Markovitz then lost a hard-fought back draw match to Kansas' Edwina Horvath 6-3, 6-4.
Also picking up wins for the Big Green were freshman
Elizabeth Warnack (Dallas, Tex.), who defeated Ohio State's Sarah Kinning 6-3, 6-4 in the D Flight back draw to pick up her first collegiate win. Sophomore Jen Murray outlasted Brittany Stewart of East Tennessee State 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (6) in a back draw match.
Dartmouth also got two victories in B Flight doubles. Senior co-captain
