New York, NY - In an extremely tight Ivy League contest the Dartmouth women's volleyball team won its fifth straight league game with a 3-0 sweep of Columbia at Levien Gymnasium on Friday. Game scores were 30-22, 30-28, 30-27.
"We were able to capitalize on some of their errors," said head coach Ann Marie Larese. "The whole match was kind of like a machine, stop and start, stop and start so I am very happy to get out of there with a win."
In game one the Big Green took a quick 15-8 lead but the Lions rallied with seven straight points to knot the game at 15-15. Dartmouth (12-3, 5-0 Ivy League) responded with a 7-1 run of its own, including two service aces by Megan MacGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.), that gave the Big Green the lead for good.
Columbia (3-12, 0-4 Ivy League) jumped to a 6-4 advantage in game two as the two teams traded the lead eight times and tied the score 12 times in a contest which saw strong attacking on both sides. With the game tied at 25, Dartmouth called a timeout and the teams traded points again, tying the score at 28. The Big Green went on to score the final two points to pull out the victory.
In game three, the Big Green forced the Lions into several early errors before Columbia stormed back with aggressive play to knot the score at 13. Dartmouth broke open the game with a 9-4 run, including three service aces by Jess Thomas (Tampa, Fla.). Leading 22-17, Columbia came back with four kills and capitalized on a few Dartmouth errors with the score at 23-22.
Dartmouth was able to widen the gap and had match-point at 29-23, but the Lions continued to show life with two kills and two aces moving within two, 27-29, before Morgan Covington's (Katy, Texas) team-high 10th kill put the match away for the Big Green.
MacGregor led all players with 18 digs while her and Thomas both recorded four service aces. Covington's was the only Big Green player in double-digits for kills while Katie Hirsch (Austin, Texas) was tops with 31 assists. Thomas and Sandy Barbut (Los Angeles, Calif.) both had double-digit digs with 10 and 13, respectively.
Dartmouth continues on the road tomorrow with a huge league matchup against defending Ivy champion Cornell at 4:00 pm.
