BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Dartmouth field hockey was defeated by the Catamounts of Vermont, 5-2, on Wednesday afternoon. Vermont scored four first half goals to pull away from the Big Green.
The Catamounts (9-4) got out to an early 2-0 in the first half on goals from Kim Strieger and Maegan Luce. Dartmouth (2-6, 1-2 Ivy) cut the lead to 2-1, just under 13 minutes into the contest, as senior co-captain Megan Strout (St. Louis. Mo.) tallied her first of the season. Senior Whitney Waugh (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) was credited with her fifth assist on the season on the score.
Danielle Collins single-handedly gave Vermont the 4-1 lead going into the half as she scored back-to-back goals in a span of four minutes.
The Catamounts increased the lead to 5-1, midway through the second half, on a goal by Megan Maynard. Senior Katy Hagy (Bedford, N.H.) closed out the scoring for the Big Green with her second of the season with three minutes remaining in the game.
Vermont out-shot Dartmouth 22-9 in the contest and held a 9-4 advantage in penalty corners.
Senior goaltender Ashley Heist (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) got the start for the Big Green and made six stops, all of which came in the first half. For the Catamounts, Kristen Heavens made two stops.
The Big Green with be on the road again this weekend as Dartmouth travels to Ivy League foe Yale for a 12 noon face-off. Dartmouth returns home a week from today when the Big Green welcome in-state rival New Hampshire to Scully Fahey Field beginning at 6 p.m.
