HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth women's volleyball team ended the 2007 season with a 3-1 victory over the visiting Columbia Lions on Saturday in Leede Arena. The victory assures the Big Green (15-9, 8-6) a fourth place finish in the Ivy League. It's the highest finish for Dartmouth since 1999.
In a match that had the Big Green showing dominance in places, Columbia (3-23, 0-14) did not make a 3-1 victory easy on Dartmouth's senior day. Game scores were 30-17, 27-30, 30-16 and 30-28.
In the first game of the night Katie Hirsch (Austin, Texas) served her team to a quick lead but Dartmouth errors allowed Columbia to open the door. Jess Thomas (Tampa, Fla.) gave her team an 11-7 lead before Amanda Marston (Austin, Texas) recorded one of Dartmouth's 10 service aces to help her team pull away as the Big Green increased its lead to 23-13 enroute to a 30-17 victory.
In Game Two it was all Columbia as the Lions went up 5-0 before increasing the lead to 8-3. Dartmouth pulled within two at 11-8 but the Lions kept the pressure on and continued to build the lead. With Marston serving, kills by Hirsch, Sandy Barbut (Los Angeles, Calif.) and several Columbia errors got the Big Green back in the game at 16-17 but the Lions never let Dartmouth get any closer, pulling away for the 30-27 win.
In the third game a see-saw contest had the scoring go back and forth but behind the serving of Megan MacGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) Dartmouth took a 7-2 lead early. Thomas helped her team to a 14-9 advantage before a Columbia timeout. Hirsch then served or helped her team to an eight-point lead at 20-12. Another Lion timeout had Dartmouth coming back from the break to pull away and win easily, 30-16.
After the Big Green took an early lead in Game Four, Columbia came back and the two then traded the lead twice. The Lions took control at 19-17. Dartmouth got within a point late in the game before eventually tying. Frances Samolowicz (St. Charles, Ill.) killed a point at 26-27 and scored another one a few plays later to tie the game at 28. Then Thomas served one of her three services aces with a Columbia attacking error serving as game point.
Four Big Green players were in double-figure digs, led by Thomas with 16. MacGregor added 13, Barbut had 12 and Samolowicz recorded 11. Hirsch set a game-high 47 balls as Marston was tops with 18 digs. Thomas and Barbut both had double-doubles with 13 digs apiece.
