HANOVER, N.H. - Meghan Fardelmann's goal with 4:20 gone in the second overtime gave Boston College a stunning, 3-2 upset of Dartmouth in NCAA women's hockey quarterfinal action Saturday.
Big Green goaltender Carli Clemis (Taber, Alta.) made an initial save, but was committed to her right, leaving a large opening for Fardelmann who connected from about eight feet away. The win sent the Eagles to next weekend's NCAA Frozen Four in Lake Placid as Dartmouth, the third-ranked team in the nation, had its season end abruptly.
The Eagles rode the play of freshman goalie Molly Schaus, who made 45 saves in 84:20, including 15 in the first 20-minute overtime. Clemis stopped 28 for the Big Green.
"We came out prepared in each of the overtime periods," said Dartmouth senior Cherie Piper (Scarborough, Ont.) who battled tears in the post-game press conference. "It just didn't go our way today."
She added, "We believed in ourselves and in each other, and that's what got us here today. It's tough. As clichéd as it is, it wasn't our day."
Dartmouth (27-5-2) played without the services of senior captain Gillian Apps (Unionville, Ont.) who was in street clothes with an injury. The ECACHL player of the year, Apps is the Big Green's second leading scorer with 30 goals and 16 assists.
"It's been an outstanding season," said Dartmouth coach Mark Hudak, whose Big Green won the ECACHL regular season and championship crowns as well as the Ivy League title. "I've never been part of a team that I am this proud of."
BC got an early lead at 1:11 of the first period when Fardelmann and teammate Kelli Stack made the most of a 2-on-1 break. The Eagles made it 2-0 in the second when Allie Thunstrom scored a shorthanded marker, with the assist to Stack.
Dartmouth quickly erased the lead with a pair of power play goals early in the third. With just 2:03 gone, Piper faked her defender to get within one, 2-1. About four minutes later, junior Nicole Ruta (Pickering, Ont.) tied the score with assists to freshman Jenna Cunningham (Medicine Hat, Alta.) and sophomore Maggie Kennedy (West Hartford, Conn.).
