HAMDEN, CONN. – A seven-run first inning for Quinnipiac was too much for the Dartmouth baseball team, as they fell to the Bobcats, 10-2, in Wednesdays non-league contest in Hamden, Conn.
The Bobcats wasted no time jumping all over Dartmouth starting pitcher Ben Murray (Grants Pass, Ore.), putting seven runs on the board in the first at bats of the game. Murray gave up three homeruns, two doubles and a single in top of the first, which put Quinnipiac up big early in the game.
After getting shut down offensively in their first two at bats, head coach Bob Whalen elected to relieve Murray and send right-hander Bobby Steinsdoerfer (Crystal Lake, Ill.) to the hill.
The Big Green got on the board in the bottom of the third inning, when Michael Pagliarulo (Winchester, Mass.) led off the inning getting hit by a pitch and being awarded first base. Erik Bell (Sierra Madre, Calif.) advanced Pagliarulo to third after he doubled to center field, and then was sent home on an RBI by James Wren (Granbury, Texas).
Dartmouth added one more tally in the fifth inning when Wren hit a ground rule double into left field, scoring Jason McManis (Flower Mound, Texas), and bringing the score to 7-2.
Newest Big Green pitcher, Miller Aldrich (College Station, Texas), gave up two runs in the top of the sixth, after he walked three straight batters and then gave up a two-run double to center field making the score 9-2.
Zach Cheaney (Houston, Texas) came in to start the seventh for the Big Green and allowed just one run in 2.1 innings pitched on a solo homerun by Jeff Mainetti. That was Mainetti's second homer of the day.
Kyle Zeis finished off the contest on the hill for Dartmouth pitching for two outs in the ninth inning. Zeis allowed no runs and just one hit. On the day, Quinnipiac out hit Dartmouth 14-6.
With the loss the Big Green drop to 5-17-1 overall, while Quinnipiac improves to 9-8-1 on the year.
Dartmouth is scheduled to have its first home games this weekend when they play host to Brown for more Ivy League action.
