The Dartmouth Rowing Club placed the Biglin Bowl in competition in 1955. It is contested among Dartmouth, Harvard and MIT and honors John A. Biglin, a professional oarsman who was the first coach of rowing at Dartmouth in 1873. Harvard has won the bowl 44 times and MIT five times. The defending champions, Dartmouth has won three times including 1994, 2002 and 2006. MIT won the first race in 1955 and again in 1963, 1964 and 1980 - breaking Harvard's streak of 15 consecutive victories. Harvard reclaimed the bowl from 1981-82 before MIT was victorious in 1983. The Crimson won the next 10 in a row before Dartmouth won its first Biglin Bowl in 1994. Harvard went on to win seven more before the Big Green's win in 2002. After winning in 2006, Dartmouth will look to repeat as Varsity Eight champions for the first time in race history.
