Norfolk, Va. - It only takes one goal to win a game and the Dartmouth men's soccer team proved that true after being outshot 15-3, but beating Old Dominion, 1-0, after a tally from Daniel Keat (Wellington, New Zealand) in the 77th minute.
The win marked Dartmouth's third-consecutive shutout as it improved to 2-1-1 while knocking Old Dominion, ranked fifth in the South Atlantic region, to 1-3-1 in front of 1,665 of the Monarch faithful at the Stihl Classic.
“This was another tremendous defensive effort by our squad and I am very pleased with the way our team is coming together,” said Head Coach Jeff Cook. “Old Dominion is a great program and they had a great crowd in a first-class atmosphere tonight. For us to win away from home was a great experience and confidence builder.”
Eleven combined fouls were about the only stats recorded in the first half as Dartmouth did not take a single shot while Old Dominion had just four attempts with one saved by Big Green keeper Sean Milligan (Westport, Conn.).
The Big Green did not get its first shot of the game until Tom Lobben (Glen Head, N.Y.) sent one high above the goal in the 66th minute. Dartmouth would need just one more attempt to seal the game when Keat ripped a shot past ODU's Evan Newton at 77:18. Senior Mike Ordonez (Coral Gables, Fla.) got things started after picking up possession in midfield. He sent the ball up to freshman Andrew Olsen (Norwell, Mass.) who crossed the ball into the box for a streaking Keat who sent it in at the far post.
“That goal was sensational - worthy of winning any game,” said Cook.
Dartmouth's defense buckled down for the next 12 minutes and held out for the 1-0 win. Milligan finished with four saves in goal to lead his team to victory.
Trevor Banks was the Monarchs' main offensive threat, tallying four shots including two on goal.
The Big Green is back in action on Sunday when it faces William and Mary at 12:00 p.m. on the final day of the Stihl Classic.
