HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth field hockey team took a 1-0 lead early in the first half, but Princeton fired back with four unanswered goals to defeat the Big Green, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon at Scully Fahey Field.
Junior Ashley Hines (Newburyport, Mass.) got Dartmouth (2-3, 1-1 Ivy) off to a great start with an impressive goal when senior co-captain Whitney Waugh (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) sent a shot on net that was deflected high by Hines and past the goaltender to put Dartmouth up 1-0, just over two minutes into the contest.
Princeton (2-2, 2-0 Ivy) kept control of the ball most of the first half and it paid off for the Tigers as Tina Bortz tied the game on a nice individual effort in front of the net and tucked it past junior goaltender Jordan Sedlacek (Golden, Colo.).
Sedlacek was able to keep the game tied with a spectacular save in the 24th minute of the first half. Princeton fired a shot on net which was deflected, but Sedlacek was up to the task and batted the ball wide for one of her three first half saves.
In the second half, Princeton wore down the Big Green with constant pressure which resulted in a 17-4 advantage in shots and a 7-3 advantage in penalty corners.
Junior Katie Kinzer put Princeton up 2-1 on a nice feed from Junior Holly McGarvie two minutes into the half and the Tigers never looked back. Junior Kristen Schwab tallied an unassisted goal ten minutes later and Bortz added her second when she received a long pass from Paige Schmidt, beat Sedlacek at the top the circle and scored on the open net.
Sedlacek stepped up for the Big Green, making a season-high 10 stops in front of the cage, but Princeton was too much as they held a 17-4 penalty corner advantage, along with a 26-6 lead in shots.
"We had chances in the first half and didn't capitalize," said head coach Amy Fowler. "In the second half, we got frustrated and gave up too many opportunities to Princeton. We need to be more consistent."
Dartmouth will be back in action tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. as they face-off against Boston University at Scully Fahey Field.
