HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth field hockey team staged a late rally against Syracuse, but is wasn't enough as the Orange held on for a 2-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at Scully Fahey Field.
In the first half, the Big Green out shot Syracuse 6-4, but the Orange tallied the lone goal of the half as Shelby Schraden tipped a shot from Brittany Angellella on a penalty corner just four minutes into the contest.
Syracuse was able to increase its lead later in the second half, when Maggie Befort took a penalty stroke that found the top of the net to give the Orange a 2-0 lead with 25 minutes remaining in the game. Dartmouth once again out shot Syracuse in the second half 9-6 and finally it paid off as Lizzie Bildner netted her third goal of the season on a penalty corner with just under five minutes to play.
The Big Green however fell short as Syracuse kept control of the ball on the offensive side and ran out the clock for their fourth win of the season. Dartmouth now falls to 1-1 on the season.
"We were flat in the first half, " said head coach Amy Fowler. "We need to play a full 70 minutes. They have played four games and we're only two games in, so that is something we will have to work on."
The Big Green will be on the road for their next two contests as they travel to Ivy League foe Brown and Providence next weekend. They will return home on September 15 to host Princeton, beginning at 12 p.m. at Scully Fahey Field.
