Hanover, N.H. - A goal by Andrew Olsen (Norwell, Mass.) in the ninth minute of the game was all Dartmouth needed to secure a 1-0 win over Wisconsin-Milwaukee in front of 1,021 fans at Burnham Field tonight.
In a game that produced more total fouls, 29, than shots, 23, the Big Green's early lead held despite an impressive second half comeback attempt by the Panthers.
"I am really pleased to win our third in a row and first at Burnham Field so hopefully it begins to feel more like home," said head Coach Jeff Cook. "The guys played a really good first half but I would have liked to see us control tempo more in the second half."
Dartmouth (4-1-1) won its third straight and remains unbeaten in its last five contests. Wisconsin-Milwaukee falls to 0-7 on the season.
The Big Green came out on fire, pressuring the Panthers' defense from the opening whistle. The early attack paid off at just 8:58 into the game when junior Craig Henderson (Wellington, New Zealand) found a streaking Olsen who popped a low left-footed shot just past UWM goalkeeper Ryan Germann.
Dartmouth held an 8-2 advantage in shots and 7-1 lead in corner kicks for the first half.
Milwaukee came out hard and fast in the second, forcing Dartmouth junior goalkeeper Sean Milligan (Westport, Conn.) to make all four of his saves in the period. Milligan made two spectacular stops in a three minute period late in the contest to keep the Big Green alive.
Henderson had his chances to give the Green a 2-0 lead, but Germann made three nice stops to damper the Dartmouth attack.
Wisconsin-Milwaukee ended the second half with an 8-5 advantage in shots, thanks to an impressive showing by Colin Baker off the bench. The Panthers also had three corner kick opportunities while Dartmouth had none.
For the game, the Big Green outshot the Panthers 13-10. Milligan had four saves in goal and earned his fourth shutout of the season while Germann had two.
"This was a tremendous crowd of over 1,000 and the environment was just great. I am thrilled to see all the students and community members come out. It's going to make this a really difficult place for opponents to come into," said Cook.
The Big Green returns to action in the Dartmouth Classic on Sunday when it takes on St. Francis (Pa.) at 2:30 p.m.
