CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Dartmouth women's volleyball is off to its best start since 1998 as the Big Green (8-2, 1-0 Ivy) won its final two games at the Crimson Classic held on the campus of Harvard University. Dartmouth defeated New Jersey Institute of Technology in the first game of the day and then were victorious over Hartford in the late match. The Big Green won both, 3-0. Seniors Sandy Barbut (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Katie Hirsch (Austin, Texas) were both named to the All-Tournament team.
In the match agaiinst NJIT, sophmore Morgan Covington (Katy, Texas) led all players with 13 kills and no errors for a .684 hitting percentage. Jess Thomas (Tampa, Fla.), Barbut and Hirsch were tops in digs with 15, 14 and 10, respectively. Hirsch also had a double-double with her 36 assists.
In the first game against NJIT the Highlanders stayed close early on but the Big Green pulled ahead on a kill by Megan MacGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) and two attacking errors on NJIT. Dartmouth closed out the game with service aces by MacGregor and Amanda Marston (Austin, Texas) to win 30-23. In the second game the Highlanders were never close as the Big Green went up early and never looked back, winning 30-21. The third and final game again went to a hot Dartmouth squad as the Big Green won easily, 30-16.
Against Hartford, Dartmouth won 30-21, 30-25 and 30-23. The Hawks were close several times but the Big Green was too tough, sweeping its second match of the day. Thomas and MacGregor both had double-doubles as Thomas notched 13 kills and 12 digs while MacGregor had 15 kills and 10 digs. Barbut was stellar with six total blocks and Hirsch added 36 assists.
"We played well today despite being tired after our emotional win over Harvard yesterday," said head coach Ann Marie Larese. "We had great distribution today as people were stepping up over and over again. Morgan and Sandy were very solid for us as Sandy just played her lights out. Our hitting percentage wasn't the best but the team came out and met our goals of winning both matches in three."
Dartmouth is back in action on Tuesday, traveling to the University of New Hampshire for a 7:00 pm start. The Big Green opens up at home on Friday at 7:00 in its second Ivy match against Harvard.
