New Haven, Conn.? The Dartmouth men's soccer team defeated Sacred Heart, 2-0, at the Yale Classic this evening for its first victory of the 2007 campaign. The Big Green moves to 1-1 overall while the Pioneers fall to 1-2.
"We are delighted to get this first win tonight and our play was significantly improved from Monday's loss to UMass," said Head Coach Jeff Cook. "A lot of guys got playing time which will strengthen our team for the future."
Junior goalkeeper Sean Milligan (Westport, Conn.) earned the shutout win with three saves in goal.
Dartmouth got on the board in the 21st minute when junior Craig Henderson (Wellington, New Zealand) sent the ball over the head of Matt Jones for his second goal of the season.
The Big Green took a 1-0 lead into halftime having outshot the Pioneers, 9-2.
Things evened out a little in the second half, though Dartmouth still held a 9-5 advantage in shot attempts. The Green got an insurance goal at 60:24 when junior Matt Carroll (North Andover, Mass.) sent a cross into the box where freshman Andrew Olsen (Norwell, Mass.) collected the ball and hit the goal in the right corner. It was the first goal of Olsen's collegiate career.
"Our back four played very well tonight led by the performance of senior Ale Frischeisen (Garden City, N.Y.)," said Cook. "They controlled the tempo both defensively and by building our offensive attack."
The Big Green held its 2-0 lead for the balance of the game and came away with the win.
Dartmouth faces the biggest test of the young season on Sunday when it squares off against #10 Northwestern at 12:00 p.m. at Yale.
