HANOVER, N.H. - Taking the top three spots, the Dartmouth men's cross country team opened the 2007 season with a victory in its own invitational Saturday, while the Big Green women grabbed second place.
For the men, junior Pat Dooley (Durham, Conn.) ran to victory over the 8k distance at Hanover Country Club. He clocked 25:52.80 in hot, muggy conditions, while senior Harry Norton (No. Reading, Mass.) was the runner-up in 26:10.10.
Junior Glenn Randall (Collbran, Colo.) was third, finishing in 26:16.00.
Dartmouth's fourth and fifth runners quickly crossed the finish line, giving the Big Green a winning score of 20 points, 28 ahead of Massachusetts-Amherst in the seven-school field. Junior Hari Iyer (Saratoga, Calif.) was sixth overall in 26:22.20, and junior Oliver Townsend (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) placed eighth in 26:33.10.
In all, Dartmouth placed eight runners in the top 12, including freshman Tom Robbins (Evanston, Ill.), 10th; sophomore Kevin Treadway (Niskayuna, N.Y.), 11th; and sophomore Alex Hall (Manchester, N.H.), 12th.
In the women's race, Dartmouth senior Susan Dunklee (Barton, Vt.) was the squad's top finisher, earning fourth place in 20:54.60 over the 5k distance.
The U.S. Naval Academy packed five runners in the top 10 to win team honors, scoring 39 points, while the Big Green was second with 57. UMass-Amherst and Keene State tied for third with 69.
Junior Caitlin Cunningham (Simsbury, Conn.) led a group of three Dartmouth runners, finishing 11th in 21:22.60. She was followed by junior Aryn Gruneisen (Erie, Pa.), 12th in 21:28.10; and senior Elisa McCarthy (Denver, Colo.), 13th in 21:34.30.
Sophomore Laura Tabor (Portsmouth, N.H.) was Dartmouth's fifth runner, finishing 19th in 21:55.60.
Both Dartmouth squads have next weekend off and resume action on September 22. The men compete at the Williams Invitational, while on the same day, the women will split the squad, traveling to both Williams and the Iona Invitational.
