CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. ? The Dartmouth field hockey team saw its two-game
winning streak come to end as the Big Green fell to Boston College,
2-1, on Sunday afternoon.
For Boston
College (9-4), Bob Dirks
led the way with both scores and goaltender Julie Berkowitz only made one save
in the win.
For Dartmouth (3-7),
sophomore Kelly McHenry (Williamsburg, Va.) tallied her second of the season in the second half,
while classmate Virginia Peisch (Koenigstein,
Germany) added
an assist. Freshman goaltender Meagan Vakiener (Port Murray, N.J.) pushed aside
five shots in the loss.
The Big Green had a great opportunity to take a lead with 19
minutes left in the first half as freshman Kelly Hood (Berlin, N.H.) fired a
shot on net, but it hit the cross bar and come out of the goal mouth. Boston College
had chances as well and held an early 5-0 advantage in penalty corners in the
first 20 minutes of the game.
At the half, Boston
College had a large advantage in shots
at 7-1 and penalty corners with the Eagles taking seven to Dartmouth's one.
Boston
College got the first
lead of the game, three minutes into the second half on a goal by Bob Dirks
with the assist going to Kathleen Murphy.
Dartmouth
answered 45 seconds later to tie the game at one as McHenry scored her second
goal of the season. Peisch assisted on the play for her sixth helper of the
year.
The Eagles took the lead for good with 3:57 remaining as
Dirks tallied her second of the game to give Boston College
the 2-1 win. The goal came on the Eagles' 14th penalty corner of the afternoon.
Boston College continued its advantage on penalty corners in
the second half and finished with 14 to Dartmouth's
one. The Eagles also led in shots by a 15-3 margin.
Dartmouth
will be back in action on homecoming this coming Saturday, Oct. 18, as the Big
Green host Ivy League foe Yale at Chase Field, beginning at 12 p.m.
