HANOVER, N.H. - The 11th-ranked Louisville Cardinals scored three second-half goals to pull away from the Big Green field hockey team as Dartmouth fell, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at Chase Field.
The Cardinals (10-5) had a balanced attack all afternoon as they had three different goal scorers. Jenna Ahern, Kayla May and Lauren Schaefer all tallied a goal apiece, while netminder Heather Bustanoby pushed aside five shots to earn her 10th win of the season.
For Dartmouth (3-9), freshman Meghan Everett (Flemington, N.J.) got the Big Green on the board late in the second half with her first collegiate goal. Classmate Kelly Hood (Berlin N.H.) was credited with the assist and fellow freshman Meagan Vakiener made five saves in the defeat.
After scoreless first half where neither team had many opportunities, Louisville struck first, five minutes into the second half. Caitlin Collins fired a shot from outside the circle and it was redirected past Vakiener by May for the 1-0 lead.
Later in the half, Lauren Schaefer added the eventual game-winner as she collected a block shot in the center of the circle on a penalty corner and she found the back of the net to the right of Vakiener to increase the lead to 2-0.
With 2:14 remaining in the game, the Cardinals went up 3-0 on a goal from Jenna Ahern. Nicole Youman struck a pass from the right side of the circle and Ahern was at the far post and she connected on the pass for the score.
The Big Green broke the shutout with 1:20 left as Hood tipped a pass from senior co-captain Ashley Hines (Newburyport, Mass.) up in the air and Everett was able to strike the ball in the air and past Bustanoby at the far post to cut the deficit to 3-1. However, Dartmouth could not capitalize on one last push as the Cardinals came away with the 3-1 victory.
The game was played evenly with Louisville holding a 17-10 advantage in shots, while also having a slim margin in penalty corners at 4-2.
The Big Green will be back in action this coming Wednesday as the Big Green face new Division I foe in Bryant University, beginning at 3 p.m. at Chase Field.
