NEW YORK, N.Y. - Freshman Meghan Everett (Flemington, N.J.) netted the game-winner with three minutes left in overtime to lift the Dartmouth field hockey team to its third Ivy League win of the season after a 3-2 win against Columbia.
For Columbia (10-4, 1-4 Ivy), Megan Davidson and Maggie O'Connor each posted goals for the Lions, while goalkeeper Gene Miller pushed aside eight shots in the defeat.
For Dartmouth (5-9, 3-2 Ivy), Sophomore Virginia Peisch (Koenigstein, Germany) tied the all-time single season Dartmouth assist record as she posted two helpers to give her 14 on the season. The Big Green attack included goals from sophomore Rebecca Sobel (Larchmont, N.Y.) and freshman Kelly Hood (Berlin, N.H.). Freshman Meagan Vakiener (Port Murray, N.J.) once again stood tall in net with 14 saves, including five big-time stops in overtime to help Dartmouth to the victory.
Dartmouth got on the board first as Peisch flipped the ball high into the circle and Sobel was their to fire home a shot to the lower right corner to give the Big Green a 1-0 lead with nine minutes remaining in the first half. For Sobel, it was her fifth of the season, which puts her second on the team.
Vakiener came up big throughout the first half, but especially after the 1-0 lead for the Big Green. She made two saves prior to the lead and posted three to preserve the lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Big Green's lead didn't last long as Columbia evened the score 6:42 into the second frame. Davidson beat two Dartmouth defenders and found the back of the net to the upper left of Vakiener for the score.
The Big Green, however, capitalized on a corner with under ten minutes remaining to get the lead back at 2-1 as Hood added her ninth of the season. Her specialty all season has been the ability to put points on the board with corners. Senior co-captain Kristen McCormick (Stoughton, Mass.) and Peisch were credited with the assists. McCormick now has seven assist on the season, while Peisch posted her 14th of the year.
Columbia evened the score 22 seconds later as O'Connor fired a shot on net, which was saved by Vakiener, but O'Connor recovered her own rebound and beat Vakiener to tie the score at 2-2.
After the Lions had multiple corners and opportunities in overtime, Dartmouth took advantage with a goal on its second shot of overtime. McCormick shot a pass through traffic infront and Everett was there to clean it up as she beat Miller to the low corner to give Dartmouth the 3-2 overtime win.
The Big Green will be back at home for Senior Day this coming Saturday as Dartmouth hosts Harvard at 12 p.m. at Chase Field.
