Princeton, N.J. ? The Dartmouth women's soccer team outshot Ivy rival Princeton and dominated the second half, but could not find the back of the net in a tough, 1-0 loss.
The Big Green outshot the Tigers, 9-5, but Princeton goalkeeper Alyssa Pont made five saves to preserve the shutout. Dartmouth goalkeeper Laurel Peak (Redding, Conn.) made two stops but was hardly tested in the contest.
“In the first half we came out slow and just not sharp enough,” said a disappointed head coach Angie Hind. “In the second I think we were only out of their half maybe two times. We dominated possession wise but to credit their defense we just could not get a clear chance.”
Dartmouth's Ivy title hopes took a hit with the loss, falling to 4-4 overall and 0-2 Ivy, with two 1-0 losses in conference play. Princeton, which celebrated the opening of its new field, moved to 6-1-1, 2-0 Ivy.
Sophomore Peyton Tata (Virginia Beach, Va.) continued her solid play of late with the first scoring threat of the game, forcing Pont to make a stop in just the second minute. The game slowed down until the 29th minute when Princeton took its first shot, an attempt by Sarah Peteraf that was saved by Peak.
Peteraf would not be denied, however, firing a strike from 25 yards out just three minutes later and beating Peak to the top right corner to put Princeton up 1-0 at 32:14.
Dartmouth threw everything it had at Princeton in the second half, outshooting the Tigers, 8-2. The Big Green had Pont on her toes, forcing her to make back-to-back saves around the 65th minute off shots by senior Becky Poskin (Leawood, Kan.) and sophomore Meagan Tibbo (Ottowa, Ont.), who gave Dartmouth a boost in her first appearance of the season.
The Big Green continued to pepper the Tigers with a frenzy of shots including four attempts in a four-minute span late in the game but never scored the elusive tying goal.
Dartmouth received a boost from backs Erin Fleischli (San Mateo, Calif.) and senior co-captain Emily Forline (Bethesda, Md.) while always consistent junior midfielder Ali Hubbard (Marshfield, Mass.) turned in what Hind described as a “fantastic” performance despite the loss.
Ultimately, Tata finished with a game-high four shots including two on goal while Poskin had three shots, two on goal. Peteraf led Princeton with three attempts and the game-winner.
The Big Green returns to Hanover for a four-game homestand including a 6:00 p.m. date with Albany on Tuesday night at Burnham Field.
