DURHAM, N.H. - With the game looking to be headed into overtime, sophomore Rebecca Sobel (Larchmont, N.Y.) blasted home the game-winner with one second remaining as the Dartmouth field hockey team squeezed out a 3-2 win over in-state rival New Hampshire.
For Dartmouth (3-6), Freshman Kelly Hood (Berlin, N.H.) once again proved to be the offensive threat for the Big Green with two goals in the first 12 minutes, while sophomore Virginia Peisch (Koenigstein, Germany) added two assists, including one coming on the game-clincher. Freshman netminder Meagan Vakiener (Port Murray, N.J.) posted seven saves in her third win of the season and third in the last four games.
For New Hampshire (5-8), Brittany Jacobs and Whitney Frates each tallied goals as New Hampshire dug itself out of a 2-0 hole early in the game with two unanswered in each half. Jenna Lehman was not tested throughout the game as she made two saves.
The Big Green didn't wait long to go on top 1-0 as Hood scored 1:52 into the contest with her team-leading fourth tally of the season. She received a centering pass from sophomore Kelly McHenry (Williamsburg, Va.), who earned her first assist of the season, and Hood drove home the shot from the left side of the circle.
Hood added her second of the night ten minutes later on a penalty corner. She posted her fifth of the season in a familiar fashion as senior Kristen McCormick (Stoughton, Mass.) provided the stick-stop on the corner and Hood beat New Hampshire's goaltender Jenna Lehman to the lower left corner for the 2-0 lead.
New Hampshire cut the lead to 2-1 with 11:21 remaining in the first half on its fourth penalty corner of the evening. Brittany Jacobs was setup by Kendall Deck and she fired a shot and beat Vakiener to the lower left for her third score of the year.
In the second half, the Wildcats knotted the score at two, 1:46 into the half on Whitney Frates' seventh score of the year. Shea found Frates in front of the net and she deflected the chip from Shea for the score.
The game-winner came with one second remaining as Peisch fired in a pass that was hammered home by Sobel for her third of the season and biggest of her career so far with the Big Green.
Dartmouth had trouble all night getting pressure on the Wildcats as the Big Green was outshot 19-8 and New Hampshire also had the advantage in penalty corners at 11-4.
The Big Green will be on the road again this weekend as Dartmouth tries to make it three in a row with a visit to Chestnut Hill to face Boston College at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
