Women's Tennis Cruises To Fourth Straight Shutout in Win Over UMass

HANOVER, N.H. ? The Dartmouth women's tennis team won their fourth consecutive 7-0 match and stretched their winning streak to 6-0 as they downed the University of Massachusetts tonight at the Boss Tennis Center and Gordon Pavilion.

The Minutewomen were eager to best an Ivy League team after being edged 4-3 by Cornell last weekend, but the Big Green came out strong and swept all three doubles matches to go up 1-0. At #1 doubles sophomores Jesse Adler (Winnetka, Ill.) and Mary Beth Winingham (Carmel, Ind.) won 8-4 over the UMass tandem that had beaten Cornell's top team last weekend. At #2 doubles freshman Georgiana Smyser (Houston, Texas) and senior tri-captain Maggie Suydam (Marblehead, Mass.) cruised to an 8-1 win. And with senior tri-captain Megan Zebroski (Port Washington, N.Y.) sidelined by the flu, freshman Molly Scott (Trabuco Cyn, Calif.) paired with sophomore Julia Zak (Bernardsville, N.J.) at #3 doubles to win 8-0.

Dartmouth was equally strong in singles as Scott won 6-0, 6-0 at #1 over Masha Pozar, who last weekend beat Cornell's #1 player. Suydam also won 6-0, 6-0 at #5, and Adler and freshman Ryan Reichel (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) both won handily at #3 and #4 singles.

Making her debut in the singles line-up, freshman Ashley Mitchell (Charleston, S.C.) won 7-5, 6-3 at #6 over an opponent who also won against Cornell last weekend. Winingham had Dartmouth's biggest battle of the day at #2 with freshman Candynce Boney, who earned Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors for her wins last weekend against Cornell's Liz Googe and Binghamton's Yulia Smirnova. But Winingham prevailed 6-3, 7-5 to complete the sweep for Dartmouth.

The Big Green return to action on Saturday, February 23, playing a double-header against Rutgers and Stonybrook. The Rutgers match is at 9 a.m. and Dartmouth then takes on Stonybrook at 3 p.m.
