Women's Tennis Drops Grueling Battle With Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. - In a five-hour match-up with Princeton University that started at 2 p.m. this afternoon and ended under the lights around 7 p.m., the No. 72 Dartmouth women's tennis team dropped its first match of the Ivy League season with a 5-2 loss to the Tigers. Four of the six singles matches went to three sets, but the Big Green was able to convert only one of the third sets to a "W." Dartmouth's record now stands at 14-2 overall, 2-1 Ivy League, while Princeton's record improves to 9-8, 2-2 Ivy League.
Dartmouth got into an early hole after being swept in the doubles. Senior tri-captain Megan Zebroski (Port Washington, N.Y.) and freshman Molly Scott (Trabuco Cyn, Calif.) were edged in a tie-breaker at No. 1 doubles, sophomores Mary Beth Winingham (Carmel, Ind.) and Jesse Adler (Winnetka, Ill.) fell 8-5 at No. 2 doubles, and senior tri-captain Maggie Suydam (Marblehead, Mass.) and freshman Georgiana Smyser (Houston, Texas) lost 8-6 at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, Scott exacted revenge on Princeton's No. 1 player Melissa Saiontz, who had beaten her in a three-set battle at the ITA East Regional in November. Scott triumphed 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 over the Tiger's top player, who is currently ranked No. 83 in the country. At No. 4 singles, Adler recorded a 6-3, 6-2 win over freshman Rebecca Parks, who was ranked among the country's top 40 players as an 18-and-under. Zebroski had a tough match with Tiger senior Ivana King at No. 2 singles, and Winingham was edged in a three-set battle 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 by freshman Taylor Marable, who is 4-0 in Ivy matches for the Tigers at No. 3 singles.
With the Tigers ahead 3-2, sophomore Carley Markovitz (South Pasadena, Calif.) and freshman Ryan Reichel (HIlton Head Island, S.C.) fought hard to put two more points on the board for the Big Green, but ultimately fell in the third set at No. 5 and No. 6 respectively.
Dartmouth takes on Penn tomorrow in Philadelphia at 12 noon.
