Women's Tennis Drops Match-Up With Penn

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The No. 72 Dartmouth women's tennis team fell 5-2 in a tight match to No. 69 Penn indoors at Levy Pavilion in Philadelphia this afternoon. Dartmouth's record now stands at 14-3 overall, 2-2 Ivy League, while Penn's record moves to 9-7 and 4-1 in the Ivy League.
In doubles, sophomores Mary Beth Winingham (Carmel, Ind.) and Jesse Adler (Winnetka, Ill.) won 8-4 at No. 2 doubles over Maria Anismova and Yulia Rivelis, but Dartmouth was unable to take the doubles point as senior tri-captain Megan Zebroski (Port Washington, N.Y.) and Molly Scott (Trabuco Cyn, Calif.) fell to the country's No. 27 team 8-3 at No. 1 and senior tri-captain Maggie Suydam (Marblehead, Mass.) and freshman Georgiana Smyser (Houston, Texas) lost 8-2 at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, the Big Green got wins at No. 3 from Winingham and from Smyser at No. 5. Winingham won a three-set duel against Julia Koulbitskaya, who had bested her in the B flight semifinal at the USTA National Tennis Center Collegiate Invitational last fall. Smyser, who had been suffering from the flu all week, returned to the line-up and played flawless attacking tennis to take out Michelle Mitchell 6-3, 6-1. At No. 1 singles Scott was edged in three sets at No. 1 by sophomore Kate Kosminskaya, currently ranked No. 117 in the nation.
Dartmouth returns to action Friday, April 18, at 2 p.m. against Brown in Providence.
