Women's Tennis Gets Big Win at Brown, 4-3

Providence, R.I. - The Dartmouth women's tennis team picked up an important win on Friday, defeating Brown, 4-3 to improve to 15-3 overall, 3-2 in the Ivy League. Brown drops to 10-9, 1-5 Ivy.

Dartmouth jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and then freshman Georgiana Smyser clinched the match at 4-2 for the Big Green with a three-set victory at No. 5 singles. Sophomore Mary Beth Winingham was still on the court with the score knotted at 1-1 in the third set, and her match at No. 3 singles was then decided by a 7-point tiebreaker that was won by her Brown opponent to take the final to 4-3.

Dartmouth came out strong, sweeping the Bears in doubles. Senior tri-captain Megan Zebroski and freshman Molly Scott won 8-6 at No. 1, Winingham and sophomore Jesse Adler won 8-5 at No. 2 doubles, and senior tri-captain Maggie Suydam and Smyser won 8-6 at No. 3 doubles.

In singles, Adler was first off the court for the Big Green with a straight set win at No. 4 singles. Zebroski downed Sara Mansur, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, and Smyser bested Alexa Baggio 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5. At No. 1 singles Scott was edged in three sets by fellow freshman Bianca Aboubakare who, like Scott, had also previously dropped only one Ivy League match. Big Green sophomore Carley Markovitz ran into impressive rookie Marisa Schonfeld at No. 6 and lost in straight sets.

Dartmouth returns to action at home on Sunday, April 20, at 12:00 p.m. against Yale.
