Ithaca, N.Y. - A career high six goal outburst by sophomore Josh Gillam
(Peterborough, Ont.) wasn't enough as the Big Green fell to No. 5
Cornell, 16-11, this afternoon on Schoellkopf field. The win was the Big Red's 14th straight Ivy League victory and brings its record to 9-2 overall and 4-0 in conference play. The loss drops Dartmouth to 4-6 overall and 0-3 in the Ivy League.
Senior Chad Gaudet (Burlington, Mass.) won the opening face-off but the Green couldn't convert. Christopher Ritchie scored just over a minute into the game on a feed from Rocco Romero. Back to back goals by Ryan Hurley put the Big Red up 3-0 with nine minutes left in the first quarter. Dartmouth got two unanswered goals by Tim Daniels (Darien, Conn.) and Brian Koch (Somers, N.Y.) to get within one. Down 4-2 with three minutes to go in the first half, Big Green coach Bill Wilson called a timeout to settle his team down. Gillam responded with his first goal of the game off an assist from Koch to make it 4-3. Cornell didn't back down, Chris Finn scored a behind-the-back goal while diving across the front of the goal to put the home team up 5-3 at the break.
The Big Red extended its lead to 8-3 in the second quarter before Gillam broke the streak, taking a pass from Ari Sussman (New Haven, Conn.), faking out the goalie and driving the shot home for an 8-4 score which would hold going into halftime.
Gaudet started the second half like the first, winning the second faceoff. This time, however, he dished off to Sussman who scored his first goal of the game making it 9-5 Cornell. Three unanswered goals put the Big Red up 12-5. Once again Gillam ended the Cornell scoring run with three-straight goals in 50 seconds to make it a 12-8 game at the 7:00 minute mark. An unassisted goal by Gillam was followed by two assisted by Koch who extended his scoring streak to 27 games with two goals and three assists this afternoon.
Gillam scored again to end the third quarter and Koch scored to open the fourth, making it 13-10. Cornell scored the next three making it 16-10 with nine minutes to go in the game. Neither team could capitalize over the next seven minutes before Sussman broke the stalemate, fighting off a defender and beating the goalie up high for the final tally.
Dartmouth led the way with 35 groundballs to 30 for Cornell. The Big Red held a slight 36-34 advantage in shots and won 17 of 31 face-offs. In goal for Dartmouth, Michael Novosel (Somers, N.Y.) had eight saves. Jake Meyers had 10 saves for Cornell.
The Big Green returns home for it's first game on Scully Fahey field in the 2008 season. A new FieldTurf surface has been installed and will be tested on Wednesday, April 16 against Ivy rival Yale. Game time is set for 6:00 pm. there will be an admission charge of $6:00 for adults and $3:00 for youth's 14 and under.
