Charlottesville, Va. ? The Big Green jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on the Cavaliers of Virginia Saturday afternoon before 2,157 fans. The lead didn't hold as Virginia showed why they are ranked in the top five nationally, regaining the lead and holding it throughout for an 11-7 victory over Dartmouth. The loss drops the Big Green to 5-7 on the season.
Chad Guadet (Burlington, Mass.) won the first faceoff of the game for the Green, tossing the ball ahead to Tim Daniels (Duxbury, Mass.). Daniels shot went wide but the Green maintained possession and Jonathan Livadas (Wilimington, Del.)made it count scoring an unassisted goal on UVA goalie Bud Petit with 12:46 on the clock.
Up 1-0, sophomore Josh Gillam (Peterborough, Ont.) made it 2-0 at 7:07 of the first quarter, picking up a groundball and shooting past Petit. Virginia responded with six straight goals to end the first period and open the second before Jimmy Mullen (Mt. Lebanon, Pa.) capitalized on a Cavalier penalty, scoring the man-up goal with an assist from Ari Sussman (New Haven, Conn.) to make it 6-3. Sussman scored his first goal of the game 30 seconds later cutting the lead to two.
The third quarter belonged to the Big Green. Sussman completed his hat trick, scoring the only two goals of the stanza, making it 8-6 headed into the final frame.
Three goals by the Cavaliers sandwiched around a Daniels unassisted tally made the final score, 11-7. Dartmouth won the ground ball battle, picking up 32 to Virginia's 30. The Big Green also won 12 of 22 faceoffs. Unlike last week's penalty filled game, this one was relatively trouble free with Dartmouth scoring once on four extra man opportunities and the Cavaliers twice on three tries.
In goal for the Big Green, Michael Novosel (Somers, N.Y.) had eight saves. Petit had seven saves for Virginia.
Brian Koch (Rye, N.Y.) did not score in the game, ending his scoring streak at 28 games.
The Big Green return home April 26 to take on Princeton. Admission will be charged, $6.00 for adults and $3.00 for youth 14 and under. Game time is set for 1:00 pm on Scully-Fahey Field.
