HANOVER, N.H. - Dartmouth lightweight crew could not defend the Baggaley Bowl from Cornell University as it experienced losses across the board this morning on the Connecticut River. Conditions were fast, with flat water and a strong tail current pushing crews towards the finish line.
The varsity eight race saw the tightest margin of the day, as Cornell edged out Dartmouth by about two seconds with a time of 5:20.2. In such fast conditions, the Big Green's time of 5:22.6 put it just under a length behind the Big Red.
The second and third varsity boats saw wider margins. The 2V finished in 5:34.7 behind Cornell's 5:28.3, while the 3V crossed the line in 5:42.6 to the Big Red's 5:31.1.
It was also a difficult race for the Dartmouth freshmen, who trailed Cornell's time of 5:34.0 by finishing in 5:46.8.
Although racing against one of the league's top-ranked teams did not produce favorable results for Dartmouth, head coach Steve Perry was relatively pleased with the performance of his crews. "I thought our crews rowed and raced well," said Perry, "but as the results indicate we have some work to do to catch up to the top of the league."
Complete results for the day can be found here.
The lightweights now have two weeks to do the work set out for them before they compete in the EARC Sprints in Worcester Mass. on Sunday, May 18.
