Northeastern Downs Big Green in Non-Conference Game

HANOVER, N.H. ? Northeastern got two goals in the first half and never looked back as the Huskies defeated the Dartmouth field hockey team, 5-0, in a non-conference match-up at Chase Field.

Northeastern (2-2) got a big game from Carolyn Mallory as she posted two goals, both in the second half, and an assist to lead the Huskies. Northeastern spread out its offense with four different goal scorers.

The Big Green (0-2) looked impressive out of the gate, holding a 4-3 advantage in penalty corners in the first half and outshooting the Huskies 10-5. Dartmouth, however, could not find the back of the net. The Big Green had three different times where their shots hit the back of the net, but were called back because of infractions.

Northeastern struck first early as the Huskies took one of their three first half corners and started an unusual corner play. Instead of firing the ball to the top of the crease, Meg Sweeney shuffled the ball to her closest teammate in Kaela Barker and she connected with Annie Clayman on a tip in for the 1-0 lead.

Ashley Bascetta gave Northeastern a comfortable 2-0 lead after finding the top of the net. During a scrum infront, Dartmouth goalkeeper Meagan Vakiener (Port Murray, N.J.) kicked the ball out of traffic and it came to Bascetta and she lifted it home.

Dartmouth had its first great opportunity with 17:50 remaining in the first when freshman Sarah Alderman (Sparta, N.J.) was denied by Northeastern goalkeeper Colleen Duffy. However, the ball came across the crease and to senior co-captain Ashley Hines (Newburyport, Mass.), but she just missed the shot wide.

In the second half, Northeastern began to take over and two of the Huskies three goals in the final half were one-on-one breakaways with the goalkeeper and both were put in Mallory.

Vakiener posted two saves in 60-plus minutes played, while senior Jordan Sedlacek (Golden, Colo.) made her first appearance of the season in the second half and made three stops in nine minutes played.

Dartmouth was outshot, 16-13, and held a 7-3 advantage in penalty corners. Hines led the way for the Big Green with six shots with three on net.

Dartmouth will be back in action this coming Sunday as the Big Green closes out their three-game home stand with Big East foe Providence coming to Hanover for a 2 p.m. start at Chase Field.
