HANOVER, N.H. ? The 25th ranked Dartmouth men's soccer team returns to Burnham Field for its home-opener when it hosts the Nike/Hypertherm Classic this Friday and Sunday. The Big Green welcomes a solid field including Colgate, Fairleigh Dickinson and Yale to Hanover for the tournament.
The Big Green takes on Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. following a matchup between Yale and Colgate at 4:30. Dartmouth squares off with Patriot League favorite Colgate to close out the tournament on Sunday at 2:30, after Yale and FDU duke it out at 12:00.
Dartmouth (1-1) got off to a quick start last weekend at Notre Dame's tournament, upsetting #6 Indiana, 4-0 and falling on a last-minute goal to #8 Notre Dame. The Big Green cracked into the national rankings following that weekend, and received a host of accolades including Ivy League Player and Rookie of the Week awards for leading-scorer
Craig Henderson (Wellington, New Zealand) and freshman forward
Lucky Mkosana (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe), respectively. Henderson, who scored twice in the upset of the Hoosiers, was also named the Soccer America National Player of the Week. Senior goalkeeper
Sean Milligan (Westport, Conn.), a Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week honoree, orchestrated the shutout in goal with six saves.
Fairleigh Dickinson is off to a 2-1 start after topping Washington and Manhattan, but falling to Portland. The Knights, who scored five goals in the win over the Manhattan Jaspers, are led by Paul King who has three goals including the overtime game-winner that day. Dartmouth and FDU have never met on the soccer field.
Colgate owns a 2-0-2 record on the season, with wins over La Salle and Rider. Alex Weekes is the top scoring threat for the Raiders, with two goals and two assists, while goalkeeper David Cappuccio has given up just two goals in 310 minutes with 18 saves. The teams are deadlocked in the all-time series, 3-3-1, including a 0-0 double overtime tie at the Yale Tournament in 2006. That game marked the first meeting between the teams in 57 years, after playing annually from 1944-49.
Yale, who Dartmouth will not face until the Ivy season on Oct. 11, is 1-0 with a win over Maine.
