Field Hockey Falls To Holy Cross in Non-Conference Action

HANOVER, N.H ? The Dartmouth field hockey team scored less than a minute into the game, but Holy Cross netted the lone goal in the second half to defeat the Big Green, 3-2, in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon.

Dartmouth (1-6) opened up a quick 1-0 lead, just 49 seconds into the game, on sophomore Rebecca Sobel's (Larchmont, N.Y.) second goal of the season. She tipped in a pass from sophomore Virginia Peisch (Koenigstein, Germany), who fired a shot in from the right side of the crease.

Nine minutes after the Big Green took the early lead, Holy Cross answered right back to tie the score at 1-1. The goal came on a penalty corner when Alanna Sikorski took a shot from the right side, which was then tipped in at the far post by Kristen Schulz for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.

Holy Cross (3-5) got its first lead of the afternoon with 7:16 remaining in the half. Kara Gonnerman gave the Crusaders the lead as she followed a shot that deflected off Dartmouth goalkeeper Meagan Vakiener (Port Murray, N.J.) and Gonnerman found the open net for the score.

The Big Green evened the score three minutes later on freshman Kelly Hood's (Berlin, N.H.) third goal of the season. All of Hood's tallies have come this week. The tying goal came on a penalty corner with senior co-captain Kristen McCormick (Stoughton, Mass.) and Peisch earning the assists. McCormick recorded her third assist of the season and Peisch added her second of the game and fifth of the season.

In the second half, Holy Cross took charge of a player advantage and took the 3-2 lead on a penalty corner as the advantage was ticking down. Courtney Callahan gave the Crusaders their second lead of the game as she was at the far post during the corner and tipped home a shot from Sikorski with six minutes to play.

Dartmouth outshot Holy Cross 19-14, but Crusader netminder Erin Singleton had an impressive night in net with 11 saves, including six in the second half. Vakiener finished the afternoon with seven saves of her own.

The Big Green will be back in action on Saturday as Dartmouth hosts Penn for its second Ivy League contest, beginning at 12 p.m. at Chase Field
