DURHAM, N.H. ? The seventh-ranked Dartmouth women's hockey
team gave up a season-high eight goals, including five on the penalty kill, as
the Big Green had its four-game winning streak come to a crashing halt with an
8-3 loss to eighth-ranked New Hampshire.
For Dartmouth (12-6-2),
junior Sarah Parsons (Dover, Mass.)
inched closer to the 100 career points plateau with a pair of power play goals,
while freshman Kelly Foley (Boston,
Mass.) extended her goal-scoring
streak to four games with her sixth of the year. Parsons now has 98 points in
her two-plus years in a Big Green uniform. Senior netminder Carli Clemis
(Taber, Alta.) was tested all night and made 16 saves to take her sixth loss
this season.
For New Hampshire
(10-5-5), Jenn Wakefield exploded for five points, including two goals and
three assists, while Kelly Paton added two goals and an assist for three
points. Kacey Bellamy posted four assists and in the end, the Wildcats had six
skaters with at least two points. Kayley Herman pushed aside 25 saves to earn
her ninth win of the year.
The Wildcats took the 1-0 lead with 10:25 remaining in the
first as the Big Green had trouble clearing the zone and Courtney Sheary made Dartmouth pay for the
mistake. She received a pass from the back boards by Angela Taylor and fired a
slap shot from the right point that surprised Clemis and gave New Hampshire a 1-0 advantage.
New Hampshire continued to
pressure the Big Green and Dartmouth
didn't help itself by turning the puck over in its own zone. The problem showed
itself again with the Wildcats getting a shot on Clemis, which kicked up in the
air and luckily for the Big Green senior Marley McMillan (St. Paul, Minn.)
was on the back check. She swiped the puck away from a Wildcat skater who had a
wide open net to keep it a one-goal game.
The first period ended with the Wildcats domination not showing
on the scoreboard in form of goals or shots. Dartmouth was fortunate to be down only one
score and to be outshot by a slim 8-5 margin.
New Hampshire
increased its lead to 2-0 on a goal from Courtney Birchard, 6:33 into the
second period. The Big Green over skated the puck at the defensive blueline and
the Wildcats earned the possession. Sam Faber fired a shot on net that was
blocked and Birchard was wide open on the far post and hit the open net for the
score.
The Wildcats took a commanding 3-0 lead with 10:14 left in
the second frame as Paton tallied New Hampshire's first power play goal of the
game. Birchard got the puck the left circle and found an open Paton sitting and
waiting on the far post for the goal.
New Hampshire
kept pouring it on in with another goal on the man advantage with 7:46
remaining to make it 4-0 in favor of the Wildcats. Multiple skaters crashed the
net on a rebound and Wakefield
got her stick on the puck and beat Clemis.
Dartmouth
broke the ice with 4:01 left in the period with its own power play goal coming
from Parsons. Sophomore Amanda Trunzo (Andover,
Minn.) slid a pass from the right
circle to Parsons at the left post and Herman sprawled out to make the initial
save. However, the puck squirted loose and Parsons lifted it over the blocker
of Herman to make it 4-1.
The Big Green added their second of the night, just 18
seconds later as Foley tallied her sixth of the season. Foley got a pass from
linemate Sarah Toupal (White Bear Lake,
Minn.) and put a shot on Herman.
She looked to have the puck secured, but it trickled past the line to make it
4-2.
New Hampshire
didn't let the momentum put up by the Big Green affect them as Micaela Long
made it 5-2 with a power play goal coming with 1:21 remaining. The Wildcats
added another score about a minute later on Wakefield's second of the night and
took a huge 6-2 lead into the second intermission.
The Wildcats were definitely playing their game of the year
so far as they scored six goals in two periods after averaging just under three
goals a game. The two teams combined for seven goals in the period, including
four on the power play.
In the third period, New
Hampshire added to its power play total with another
goal on the man advantage, making it 7-2 with 13:27 left in the period. The
goal came from Maggie Joyce during a scrum in front in which Clemis couldn't
find the puck.
Dartmouth
cut the deficit to 7-3 with a power play goal of its own, coming from Parsons
on her second goal of the night on the man advantage. She collected the puck on
a wide shot from senior Julia Bronson (Arlington,
Va.) and made a wrap-around move
which beat Herman to the near post.
New Hampshire added number
eight of the night on a 5-on-3 advantage with a nice tic-tac-toe passing
display with Paton on the receiving end for her second of the night on the
power play to finish the scoring as New
Hampshire defeated the Big Green, 8-3.
With the eight goals given up, it was the first time Dartmouth had allowed
eight goals in a game since Harvard beat the Big Green at Thompson Arena in 2002
in a 9-2 loss. New Hampshire
scored five times on the power play in seven chances, while the Big Green was efficient
in its opportunities, going two-for-two on the power play.
Dartmouth
will be taking a much needed two-week break after eight games in 18 days. The
Big Green will be back in action on Jan. 30 at Rensselaer.
