Women?s Tennis Wins Both Singles and Doubles Titles at Big Green Invite

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Dartmouth women's tennis team battled hard against No. 42 Wake Forest this afternoon, pushing the Demon Deacon's top four singles players to tiebreakers and winning at No. 3 doubles, but ultimately fell 7-0. Wake improves to 4-0 for the season, while the Big Green is 0-2 for 2009.

The freshmen pairing of Shelley Carpeni and Carissa King put Dartmouth on the board in doubles with an 8-4 victory at No. 3. But Wake's No. 1 team of Sasha
Kulikova/Sierra Poske, ranked No. 14 in the ITA Southeast Region rankings, prevailed 8-5 over junior tri-captain Mary Beth Winingham and sophomore Molly Scott. The Deacons took the doubles point with an 8-3 victory at No. 2 over junior tri-captain Jesse Adler and sophomore Georgiana Smyser.

In singles, the Big Green and Demon Deacons fought through tiebreakers in the top four singles slots. At No. 1 Scott fell 6-4, 7-6 (2) to No. 50 Sasha Kulikova,
an All Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) pick last year. Winingham was downed 7-6, (2), 6-4 at No. 2 by Sierra Poske, and classmate Adler was edged 7-6 (8), 6-3 by Emilee Malvehy. Smsyer traded leads with Christian Tara at No. 4, but was ultimately defeated 6-4, 7-6 (5). And at No. 5 and No. 6 Wake was just too strong as junior Carley Markovitz went up against a former USTA top ten junior player, Katarina Reveche, and Carpeni played Wake's star freshman, Ryann Cutillo.

The Big Green return to action at Boston University on Saturday, February 7, at 1 p.m.
