Box Score
HANOVER, N.H. ? The third-ranked Dartmouth women's hockey
team carried a 1-0 lead into the second period, but Princeton reeled off three
goals in the middle frame and cruised to a 4-1 win over the Big Green in conference action at
Thompson Arena on Saturday afternoon.
For Dartmouth (8-5-2, 6-3-2
ECAC Hockey, 2-2-0 Ivy), senior captain Shannon Bowman (Leamington,
Ont.) had the lone tally for the Big Green, while senior netminder Carli Clemis
(Taber, Alta.) took the loss with 30 saves between the pipes.
For Princeton (9-8-1, 6-5-0
ECAC Hockey, 2-2-0 Ivy), four different skaters potted goals, led by Melanie
Wallace who netted the game-winner in the second period. Kristen Young came to
play for the Tigers and pushed aside 26 shots to earn her ninth win of the
season.
Dartmouth
got on the board first with a shorthanded score from Bowman with 11:21
remaining in the opening period. She received a pass from fellow captain Sarah
Newnam (Clifton, Va.) and snuck the puck between the glove
and left pad of Young as it trickled into the net for a 1-0 lead. It was her third
of the season and first coming a man down.
In the second period, Princeton raced ahead of the Big Green
with three goals in the frame, including two unassisted goals that came from Dartmouth turnovers in its
own zone.
The first for the Tigers came 2:27 into the second period as
Wallace beat Clemis at the doorstep and inside the right post after the Big
Green committed a turnover. She fought through traffic and made her own scoring
chance to knot the game at 1-1. About two minutes later Princeton
took the lead at 2-1 on a goal from Caroline Park. Sasha Sherry fired a shot
from the right point that was deflected in midair by Park and passed a
surprised Clemis.
Dartmouth
had a couple of chances throughout the period. Freshman Kelly Foley (Boston, Mass.) found
herself all alone with the Princeton
netminder, but Young was up for the task and made the save. Junior Sarah
Parsons (Dover, Mass.) also had a one-on-one opportunity and
Young stone Parsons to keep it a one-goal game.
Princeton extended its lead to 3-1 late in the second as
Julie Johnson sat in the slot and Dartmouth
tried to clear the puck, but Johnson was right there to intercept the pass and
beat Clemis for some insurance.
In the third period, Dartmouth
had a chance to get back in the game with three minutes left as the Big Green
went on a 5-on-3 advantage. Dartmouth
fired a few shots on net, but no significant scoring chances.
The Tigers closed out the scoring with one minute remaining
in the game. Katherine Dineen had a shot blocked, but stayed with the puck and
deked out Clemis in front of the net, ending up with a backhand score to make
it 4-1 in favor of Princeton.
With the dominance in the second period, Princeton
outshot the Big Green 34-27, including a 20-6 advantage in the middle frame. It
was the first time this season Dartmouth
has been outshot at home. The Tigers capitalized on one power play chance in
the six they received, while the Big Green went 0-for-5 on the man advantage.
Dartmouth has a quick
turnaround as the Big Green travels to Harvard to face off against the Crimson
at 7 p.m. on Tuesday evening from the Bright Hockey
Center.
