HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth women's hockey team took a 1-0 lead into the second period, but fourth-ranked New Hampshire fired back with three scores in the second frame and cruised to a 4-1 win over the Big Green on Saturday night at Thompson Arena.
Dartmouth (5-5-1) got its lone goal from senior co-captain Jenna Cunningham (Medicine Hat, Alta.) with assists given to sophomores Kelly Foley (Boston, Mass.) and Jenna Hobeika (Alpine, N.J.). Senior Mariel Lacina earned the start in net and was one off of her season high with 29 stops between the pipes.
The Wildcats (11-2-4) saw Kelly Paton and Micaela Long have flawless games with four points each as both netted a goal and handed out three assists. Kristina Lavoie posted a goal and two assist with the score coming on the power play, while Kristine Horn also found the net on the power play. Kayley Herman was strong all night in net, making 30 saves and earning her sixth win of the year.
Dartmouth came out with some confidence and dominated the first 10 minutes of the period, but had nothing to show for it. The Wildcats got a few odd man breaks, but their shot was either blocked or sent wide.
After killing off New Hampshire's lone power play of the period and blocking six shots, the Big Green got took a 1-0 lead with Cunningham netting her eighth of the season. She charged down the left side and she followed her first shot after it was stopped by Herman and tucked a backhand just inside the far post for the goal. Foley and Hobeika assisted on the play.
The Wildcats played a totally different period in the second period, outshooting Dartmouth 14-10 and tallying three goals to make it 3-1. Paton was involved in all three goals for New Hampshire as she got UNH on the board with 7:39 remaining in the period and assisting on the final two of the frame.
Long also scored in the second and added it just two minutes after Paton's tally. The Wildcats increased the lead to 3-1 with a power play goal from Kristine Horn and took a commanding lead into the third period.
The third period was uneventful for Dartmouth, but the Big Green was able to outshoot the Wildcats, 10-9. New Hampshire scored the lone goal of the period from Lavoie with the score coming on the power play to make it 4-1.
Dartmouth was shutout on the power play as the Big Green went 0-for-2 with the man advantage. UNH capitalized on two of its five opportunities with the extra skater.
