HANOVER, N.H. -- The eighth-ranked Dartmouth men's squash team dropped an exciting, 6-3 match to fifth-ranked Harvard Wednesday evening at the Berry Racquet Center. Harvard also moved to 3-0 overall with the victory while the Big Green falls to 3-1.
With the teams using a three-court system, the Big Green grabbed a 2-1 lead after the first three matches, as Dartmouth won at No. 3 and No. 6. The Crimsons Zeke Scherl fell to Robert Maycock (Devonshire, Bermuda) at the No. 3 spot, 3-1 (11-7, 10-12, 11-5, 11-9). No. 6 Michael Lewis (Santa Barbara, Calif.) was victorious over Franklin Cohen with a 3-1 decision (11-9, 11-9, 13-15, 11-8).The Crimson picked up a win at the No. 9, as Alexander Ma overpowered Daniel Wagman (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) in three straight games (11-5, 11-9, 11-7).
Harvard then won the next three matches at No. 2, 5 and 8 to take a 4-2 lead. At the No. 2 position, Richard Hill earned a hard-fought victory against Nicholas Sisodia (Chicago, Ill.). Hill won game one, 11-6, but dropped the next to by 11-7 margins. He responded with an 11-8 victory in game four and then clinched the match by taking the fifth game, 11-6. At No. 5, Jason Michas topped Luke Lee (Exeter, N.H.) in straight sets. Michas outlasted Lee, 17-15, in the first game, before taking the next two 11-8 and 11-3. The Crimson also won at No. 8, as William Ahmed defeated Stephen Wetherill (Ambler, Pa.), 3-2. Ahmed claimed the first two games, 11-8 and 11-3, but dropped the next two, 5-11 and 6-11. In the fifth and decisive game, Ahmed collected an 11-9 victory to take the match.
In other action, Alex Lavoie was downed, 3-0, at the No. 7 position by Brian O'Toole (Short Hills, N.J.) (11-8, 11-4, 11-5), making the overall match score, 4-3, in favor of the Crimson. At the No. 4, J. Reed Endresen clinched the match for Harvard, as he topped Michael Shrubb (Devonshire, Bermuda), 11-6, 11-9, 11-3. Colin West improved to 3-0 on the season at the No. 1 slot, as he downed the Big Green's No. 1 player, Chris Hanson (Greenwich, Conn.) in three straight games (11-9, 11-3, 11-4). Dartmouth had defeated Harvard, 5-4, during the Ivy scrimmages in November, but lost the key regular-season matchup against its Ivy League rival.
Up next, the Big Green will play Yale and Trinity on Jan. 9 on the campus of Yale University in New Haven, Conn.
