BOSTON ? In a meet with Boston College, Maine and Rhode Island, Dartmouth
women's swimming and diving swept the field while the men won two out
of three.
On the women's side, Dartmouth edged BC, 172-162 and handily defeated Maine, 241-96, and URI, 24-193. The Dartmouth men topped Maine, 269-70, and URI, 215-119 but dropped a close one to BC, 172-162.
Dartmouth women's 200-yard medley relay edged two Boston College teams for first place in the event. Galen Barry (Wayne, Pa.), Caitlin Keenan (Encintas, Calif.), Kelsey Pinson (Portland, Ore.), and Caitlin Nicholson (Ithaca,N.Y.), all freshmen, finished with a time of 1:51.85
Pinson, Elizabeth Kamai (Corte Madera, Calif.), Maddie Steiner (Dallas, Texas), and Hilary Preston (Medina, Wash.) took home the women's 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:32.77 for the Green.
Individually, the Big Green women won five swimming events and swept the diving events. Steiner won the 200-yard individual medley (2:08.76) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:30.06). Nicholson won the 100-yard butterfly in 59.61 seconds.
The Green took the top two spots in the 200-yard butterfly and the 200-yard backstroke. Anna Sonstegard (Sioux Falls, S.D.) finished first in the butterfly event with a time of 2:05.40, followed by Virginia Selden (Birmingham, Ala.), who finished with a 2:10.35. Carolyn Rippe (Colleyville, Texas) and Barry finished the backstroke with times of 2:09.42 and 2:10.14, respectively.
Erica Serpico (Moorestown, N.J.) won both diving events for the Green. Serpico won the 1-meter dive with a score of 232.90 and later won the 3-meter dive (248). Kathleen Brady (Upland, Calif.) finished third in the 1-meter dive (220.60). Brady finished second in the 3-meter dive (235.2) and Bridget Duffey (Boxford, Mass.) finished third (232.9) to sweep the event.
On the men's side, Dartmouth won the 800-yard freestyle relay. John Hill (Erie, Pa.), Jack Driessen (Ridgefield, Conn.), Zak Clare-Salzler (Gainesville, Fla.), and Billy Haley (Morristown, N.J.) finished with a time of 7:00.12.
Mickey Ahern (Old Westbury, N.Y.)won the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events. Ahern finished the 100-yard event with a time of 53.74 and later followed with a time of 1:55.38 in the 200-.
Dartmouth claimed the top two times in the 200-yard butterfly. Jonathan Panzl (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) won the event with a time of 1:55.38 and Chris Koppel (Wilmington, Del.)followed up with a time of 1:59.37.
Hill won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.07, edging out Evan Denard of Rhode Island by .8 seconds.
The men came away with wins in the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. Chris Plante (Valrico, Fla.) won the 1-meter dive with a score of 280.65, followed by Mike Brown (Newton, Mass.) (272.85).
Brown and Plante flipped finishing places in the 3-meter dive. Brown won the event with a score of 302.40 while Plante had a score of 262.65 to finish second. Spenser Mestel (Shoreline, Wash.) gave Dartmouth the sweep in the event with a score of 232.
The women's team returns to the pool February 7 to host Northeastern at 12:00 pm in the Karl Michael Pool. The men return a week later when both teams will host Columbia February 14.
