HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth women's tennis team displayed its depth tonight in a 5-2 victory over the University of Massachusetts at the Boss Tennis Center and Gordon Pavilion.
The Big Green got straight set singles victories at numbers three through six from sophomore Georgiana Smyser (Houston, Texas), junior Carley Markovitz (South Pasedena, Calif.), sophomore Ryan Reichel (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) and freshman Carissa King (Charlotte, N.C.), while also sweeping the doubles point. Dartmouth moves to 2-6 on the season, while UMass stands at 4-4.
With sophomore Molly Scott (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) sitting out the singles junior tri-captain Mary Beth Winingham (Carmel, Ind.) took over the top spot and was narrowly edged, 10-8, in a third set super-breaker by UMass freshman Magdalena Ploch. Junior tri-captain Jesse Adler (Winnetka, Ill.) moved up to No. 2 and fell in straight sets to tenacious sophomore Candynce Boney, a 2008 first team All-Atlantic Ten conference player. Smyser romped 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3, and Markovitz prevailed 7-5, 6-1 at No. 4. Reichel won handily, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 5, while King cruised to a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 6.
At the No. 1 doubles spot, Scott and Winingham won 8-3 to rack up their sixth-straight win. At No. 2 freshman Shelley Carpeni (New York, N.Y.) and Smyser teamed up for an 8-2 thumping, while junior Julia Zak (Bernardsville, N.J.) and Markovitz combined for an 8-6 victory at No. 3.
Dartmouth returns to action at home against Quinnipiac on Friday, February 27, at 4 p.m. at the Boss Tennis Center.
