HANOVER, N.H. - The fourth-seeded Dartmouth women's hockey team netted six power play goals with two coming from freshman Reagan Fischer (Irma, Alta.) to take the third and deciding game from fifth-seeded Colgate by defeating the Raiders, 7-3, on Sunday afternoon at Thompson Arena.
For Dartmouth (18-9-4), Fischer led the way with two power play goals and an assist for three points, while sophomore Amanda Trunzo (Andover, Minn.) chipped in with a pair of scores, including one on the man advantage. Freshman Kelly Foley (Boston, Mass.) set a new career-high in points and assists with three helpers on the afternoon. Senior Carli Clemis (Taber, Alta.) was excellent in net, making 25 saves to earn her eighth career postseason victory.
For Colgate (19-14-3), Beth Rotenberg, Elin Brown and Hannah Milan each tallied goals, while Sam Hunt closed out her impressive collegiate career with a pair of assists for two points. Kimberly Sass had a tough day between the pipes, giving up seven goals and making 26 saves in the loss.
Dartmouth took control right from the beginning and Kennedy made the Raiders pay for its first mistake. On the power play, senior Maggie Kennedy (West Hartford, Conn.) received a pass from senior Julia Bronson (Arlington, Va.) and fired a laser from the point that went through traffic and past Sass for the 1-0 lead.
Fischer increased the Big Green's lead to 2-0 with her 13th of the season and first of the postseason. Dartmouth was on the man advantage again and Foley was on the end line. She slid the puck through the crease and found Fischer's stick and she buried it. Senior co-captain Sarah Newnam (Clifton, Va.) was also credited for an assist on the play.
The power play explosion keep coming as senior Marley McMillan (St. Paul, Minn.) scored her first collegiate postseason goal on the power play with 58 seconds remaining in the period. Once again, Fischer was involved as she skated into the offensive zone to the right circle and shifted the puck to McMillan, who hit the open net for the 3-0 lead.
Clemis was amazing in net in the period, making 12 saves, including a pair of unbelievable sprawled out stops to maintain the shutout through the first.
After a scoreless second period, the two teams exploded for a total of seven goals in the final frame.
Fischer got things started in the period with her second of the game, coming from Foley just 1:13 into the frame. She got a pass from Foley and saw that no one was picking her up, so she skated into the left circle and fired a wrister past Sass to give the Big Green a commanding 4-0 lead.
Dartmouth made it 5-0 four minutes later as Trunzo netted her team-leading 20th goal of the season on the power play. She now has 11 power play goals on the season to lead ECAC Hockey. Junior Sarah Parsons (Dover, Mass.) earned the assist on the play to give her seven points in the series with five goals and two assists. She is now has 17 career playoff points, which puts her tied for sixth all-time.
Colgate got on the board with 12:14 left in the period on Rotenberg's 14th of the year with the assists going to Marissa Dombovy and Clancy Todd. Dombovy circled behind the net, which made Clemis fall on an edge and Parsons was able to beat Dombovy to the far post to block the initial shot. However, Rotenberg was there for the rebound to make it 5-1.
With 9:46 left in the period, the Raiders scored on the power play again, this time Milan scored her ninth of the season coming from Hunt.
Trunzo was at it again with 5:41 left as she scored on a 4-on-4 situation to give the Big Green a 6-2 lead. Kennedy provided the pressure in the offensive end, creating a Colgate turnover and Trunzo was there and beat Sass on a breakaway.
The Raiders scored their final goal of the game with 5:01 left. Brown scored the power play goal with the assist going to Hunt. Dartmouth closed out the scoring with 1:31 left as Newnam connected on a slap shot that rose up and beat Sass glove side to make it a 7-23 final.
Dartmouth scored six power play goals on 13 opportunities, while Colgate tallied three goals in seven chances. The Big Green held a 33-28 advantage in shots.
With the win, Dartmouth moves on to the ECAC Hockey Semifinals next Saturday at Harvard to face-off against the second-seeded St. Lawrence Saints. Stay tuned to DartmouthSports.com for updates on the times for the semifinals and championship games next weekend.
