SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The Dartmouth women's tennis team fell to Cal Poly 6-1 this afternoon on the first match of the Big Green's spring break trip. Dartmouth's record dropped to 5-7 while Cal Poly improved to 9-5 on the year.

The Big Green pushed the Mustangs, who've been ranked as high as No. 70, to three sets in three of the singles matches. But only sophomore Georgiana Smyser (Houston, Texas) at No. 4 came away with a victory. Junior tri-captain Jesse Adler (Winnetka, Ill.) fell in three sets at No. 3, as did classmate Carley Markovitz (South Pasadena, Calif.) at No. 5. At No. 1 Molly Scott (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) lost to Suzie Matzenauer, who transferred from Northwestern last fall, and junior tri-captain Mary Beth Winingham (Carmel, Ind.) fell at No. 2 to No. 71 Brittany Blalock, who is 11-1 in dual match play. Sophomore Ryan Reichel (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) was edged 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 at No. 6.

In doubles, Adler and freshman Carissa King (Charlotte, N.C.) defeated Matzenauer and Amy Markhoff 8-7 at No. 2. But Dartmouth was unable to take the doubles point as Scott and Winingham's eight-match win streak was halted by Blalock and Steffi Wong, who've been ranked as high as No. 31 this year. Freshman Shelley Carpeni (New York, N.Y. and Smyser were stopped 8-4 at No. 3 doubles.

Cal Poly head coach Hugh Bream commented, "Dartmouth is a deep team and this was a good test for us coming out of finals. It was a close match, the scores were deceptive. It was a great match to get us ready for Pepperdine tomorrow."

Dartmouth returns to action on Sunday, March 22, at 10 a.m. at the University of California Santa Barbara.
