SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Dartmouth women's tennis team was edged 4-3 by the University of California, Santa Barbara this afternoon in a cliffhanger of a match. Dartmouth's record is now 5-8 while UCSB, riding a 9-2 win streak at home, improves to 11-4.

After a morning coastal storm delayed the start of the match by over an hour, the Big Green took to the courts with temperatures in the low 50s and winds gusting over 25 mph. Sophomore Molly Scott (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) and junior tri-captain Mary Beth Winingham (Carmel, Ind.) were triumphant at No. 1 doubles, but the Green were unable to take the point as junior tri-captain Jesse Adler (WInnetka, Ill.) and freshman Carissa King (Charlotte, N.C.) and sophomore Georgiana Smyser (Houston, Texas) and freshman Shelley Carpeni (New York, N.Y.) fell at No. 2 and 3, respectively.

In singles, Dartmouth got wins Scott, junior Carley Markovitz (South Pasadena, Calif.), and sophomore Ashley Mitchell (Charleston, S.C.). At No. 1 Scott, defeated her childhood friend Michelle Murphy in three sets. Markovitz at No. 4 halted her opponent's 11-2 win streak, and Mitchell won in straight sets at No. 6. Adler fell in straight sets at No. 3, while sophomore Ryan Reichel (HIlton Head Island, S.C.) was downed in three sets. With the match knotted at 3-3, Winingham was locked in a three-set battle with Jill Damion. But Damion ultimately prevailed 7-5 in the third set tie-breaker to clinch the match for the Gauchos.

Dartmouth returns to action at Cal State Northridge on Wednesday, March 25, at 2 p.m.
