HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth women's tennis team battled all afternoon against 46th-ranked Princeton, but sophomore Georgiana Smyser (Houston, Texas) ultimately got the only win for the Big Green as they fell 6-1 to the Tigers at the Boss Tennis Center and Gordon Pavilion.
The Big Green moves to 8-11 (2-2 Ivy League), while the Tigers, who downed Harvard 5-2 on Friday, are now 16-7 (4-1 Ivy League).
Dartmouth was swept in doubles for the first time this Ivy League season. Sophomore Molly Scott (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) and junior tri-captain Mary Beth Winingham (Carmel, Ind.) were edged in a tiebreaker at No. 1 by Taylor Marable and Hilary Bartlett. At No. 2 junior tri-captain Jesse Adler (Winnetka, Ill.) and freshman Carissa King (Charlotte, N.C.) fell 8-4, while junior Julia Zak (Bernardsville, N.J.) and Smyser were downed 8-5 at No. 3.
The Big Green fought hard in singles, winning one of three singles matches against Princeton's blue-chip freshmen (the Tigers had the top-rated recruiting class in the country last year). Scott fell at No. 1 to Princeton's top recruit, Lauren McHale, who had been ranked No. 5 in the country as a USTA junior, and Winingham lost a tight 6-4, 6-4 match at No. 2 to freshman Hilary Bartlett (No. 15 in the country as a junior).
Smyser took out the third blue-chip freshman at No. 4, Rachel Saiontz (#11 in the country as a junior), in convincing fashion, 6-1, 6-3. At No. 3 Adler squared off against Princeton's other blue-chip player, junior Melissa Saiontz (#2 in the country as a junior player), but fell in straight sets. Junior Carley Markovitz (South Pasedena, Calif.) was also downed in straight sets at No. 5 by Taylor Marable, who'd been a top 50 player in USTA juniors, and sophomore Ryan Reichel (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) was edged 6-4, 6-3 at No. 6 by Blakely Ashley, formerly a top 60 junior player.
Dartmouth returns to action at Yale on Friday, April 17, at 2 p.m. Fans can follow live score updates on Twitter at: http://twitter.com/Dartmouth10s_w.
