PRINCETON, N.J. ? Senior captain Brian Koch (Rye, N.H.) netted his 100th career goal for the Dartmouth men's lacrosse team, but it wasn't enough as the Big Green fell to Princeton, 14-7, in Ivy League action on Saturday afternoon.
Dartmouth (4-10, 1-4 Ivy) was led by Koch who tallied two goals and two assists for four points, while the Big Green had five other goal scorers. Freshman Fergus Campbell (New Canaan, Conn.) posted nine saves and took the loss and was relieved by senior Pat Marshall (Lutherville, Md.) in the second half. Marshall made five saves in his 25 minutes of play.
Princeton (11-2, 4-1 Ivy) got four goals from Jack McBride and four points from Tommy Davis on three goals and an assist. Rob Engelke and Mark Kovler contributed to the win with two goals apiece with Kovler adding two assists to his two goals for four points. MacKenzie Scott was also a major player for the Tigers with three points on a goal and two assists. Princeton used three goalies, but Tyler Fiorito earned the win by making seven saves in his 45 minutes of play.
It didn't take long for the Tigers to jump on the Big Green and take a 1-0 lead as McBride scored just 11 seconds into the contest. Princeton's other top goal scorer Davis gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead with his 21st of the season at the 7:48 mark of the opening quarter. Kovler gave Princeton a 3-0 lead at the end of the first frame.
The Tigers took advantage of a man-up opportunity early in the second quarter as McBride added his second of the game three minutes into the frame and he added another a minute later to give Princeton a commanding 5-0 lead with 11:00 left in the half. The Tigers kept coming and Engelke gave Princeton a 6-0 lead with his eighth of the year. Chris McBride extended the lead to 7-0 in favor of the Tigers with his 16th of the season with 2:40 left in the second quarter.
The Big Green was outshot in the first half by a 22-12 margin and Campbell made eight saves in the first 30 minutes. Princeton held an 18-10 advantage in ground balls and was a perfect 8-for-8 in clears. Fiorito pushed aside six shots to keep Dartmouth scoreless in the opening half.
The Tigers continued their dominance into the second half as they opened the third quarter with three consecutive scores with two coming from Davis and one from Kovler to make it 10-0. Dartmouth got on the board with 5:17 remaining in the third quarter as junior Josh Gillam (Peterborough, Ont.) scored his fifth of the season. Prior to Gillam's goal Princeton netted 10-straight goals without a Dartmouth answer.
Engelke pushed the lead back up to a 10-goal deficit with his second of the afternoon with one second left in the third quarter.
The Big Green turned it on in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Tigers 6-3, but it was too late as the Tigers came away with the 14-7 win. Koch led the way in the frame with two scores, including a man-up goal. Sophomore Rhett Miller (Dallas, Texas) tallied his fifth of the season in the fourth quarter, while junior Andrew Pollack (South Glastonbury, Conn.) was credited with his first of the year. Senior Philip Killian (Washington, D.C.) added his fourth of the season and sophomore Joshua Etzion (Boca Raton, Fla.) earned his fifth in the loss.
Dartmouth will close out the 2009 regular season as Harvard comes to Hanover to face the Big Green next Saturday at 1 p.m. on Senior Day at Scully-Fahey Field.
