HANOVER, N.H. ?A nine-run second inning allowed Dartmouth to cruise to a 14-2 victory in the first game of a doubleheader before falling to Harvard in game two in 10 innings, 6-4, in front of 1,237 fans at Red Rolfe Field at Biondi Park on Senior Day. Coupled with Brown's doubleheader split at Yale this afternoon, the Big Green (21-12, 15-3 Ivy) have clinched at least a share of the Rolfe Division crown as they own a two-game lead on the Bears with two to play.
Sophomore Jeff Onstott (Houston, Texas) was 3-for-4 in the opener with a single, double, triple and four RBIs, while senior Johnathon Santopadre (Vacaville, Calif.) and junior Brett Gardner (Bellevue, Wash.) each homered during the nine-run outburst. It equaled the largest inning this season for the Ivy's leading offense, averaging over nine runs per conference game.
Junior Robert Young (Cleburne, Texas) was solid on the mound as well, hurling all seven innings while holding the Crimson to two runs on five hits and a pair of walks. He struck out four batters in improving to 4-3 on the season.
Harvard (11-27, 9-9 Ivy) did touch Young for a run to start the game in the first. Dillon O'Neill reached base when he was hit by an 0-2 pitch. With one out, Young picked him off first, but he beat the throw to second, with sailed into left field to allow O'Neill to scamper to third. Harry Douglas then rapped a single back through the box to score the run.
In the bottom half, Dartmouth wasted no time in knotting the score at one as freshman Joe Sclafani (Palm City, Fla.) drew a lead-off walk and Onstott hit an RBI double off the left-field fence.
The wheels fell off for the Crimson starter Jonah Klees (2-3) in the second. First he walked Gardner, then senior Kyle Evans (Springfield, Mo.) bunted for a single. Santopadre swung at an 0-1 pitch and sent a high, soaring drive to left that carried out of the ballpark for his third four-bagger of the season and a 4-1 lead.

The Big Green weren't finished yet as Sclafani walked again and Onstott boomed a triple to straight-away center, ending Klees' day early. Jeff Reynolds came in to pitch and was immediately touched for an RBI double by junior Nick Santomauro (North Caldwell, N.J.). After a strikeout, senior Ray Allen (Longwood, Fla.) hustled for a double on a shallow fly to left-center, but Santomauro could only advance to third. Junior Jim Wren (Granbury, Texas), who extended his hitting streak to 12 games in the doubleheader, made that a moot point by ripping the next pitch up the middle for a two-run single. Gardner then crushed a 2-0 fastball over the left-field fence for his third homer of the year, making it 10-1 and the fifth straight game scoring in double digits.
Doubles by O'Neill and Douglas in the third gave Harvard its second and final run of the game.
In the sixth, Dartmouth tacked on four more runs. Evans hit a double to score Allen who had singled, Onstott rapped a two-run single with the bases loaded, and Santomauro drove in the final run with a single through the right side.
In game two, junior Ben Murray (Grants Pass, Ore.) pitched a gem, allowing just two runs on five hits in his eight innings. He did not walk a batter and fanned five, facing just three over the minimum during his stint on the mound.
The two teams were locked in a scoreless duel through four innings before the Big Green broke through for three runs against Brent Suter. A lead-off walk to Santopadre and a base hit to center by Sclafani put runners at first and second. Onstott bunted the duo over, setting up Santomauro who hit a deep fly to put Dartmouth on the board. Suter was lifted with a possible calf injury, and senior Mike Pagliarulo (Winchester, Mass.) greeted reliever Will Keuper with a two-run blast to right, his fifth of the year.
The Crimson hit a two-run blast of their own in the sixth as Matt Rogers deposited an 0-2 fastball over the fence in left, his ninth long ball.
Dartmouth had numerous base runners in the sixth through eighth innings, but could only manage one run while leaving eight runners on. The lone tally came in the seventh when Allen drove a two-out RBI triple to right-center.
Big Green closer Ryan Smith (Greenlawn, N.Y.), who is tied for sixth nationally in saves, replaced Murray to close the door in the ninth, only to have Harvard battle back and tie the score. O'Neill began the inning with a line single and advanced to second when the ball handcuffed the center fielder. Taylor Meehan followed with an RBI double, and Douglas beat out a bunt to put runners on the corners with nobody out. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Tyler Albright tied the score at four, but Smith escaped without further damage to give Dartmouth a chance in the bottom of the ninth.
A lead-off single by freshman Jake Carlson (Woodlands, Texas) was wasted, however, and the Crimson tacked on two more in the tenth against Smith (2-1). Down to his last strike, Douglas lined a two-out, two-run triple into the right-field corner to bring home the winning runs.
Tom Stack-Babich (1-0), Harvard's fourth pitcher of the game, earned his first victory with 2.1 scoreless innings, including a perfect tenth.
Senior Mike Pagliarulo (Winchester, Mass.) smacked a two-run homer, his fifth of the year, to help the Dartmouth cause, while freshman Joe Sclafani (Palm City, Fla.) had three hits.
Dartmouth and Harvard will finish their four-game series in Cambridge with a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. Just one win for the Big Green would give them the Rolfe Division title outright and homefield advantage for the Ivy Championship series next weekend.
