HANOVER, N.H. ? The Dartmouth men's lacrosse team will wrap up its 2009 season this Saturday at 1 p.m. as 19th-ranked Harvard travels to Hanover for Senior Day.
LAST TIME OUT
Senior captain Brian Koch netted his 100th career goal for the Dartmouth men's lacrosse team, but it wasn't enough as the Big Green fell to Princeton, 14-7, in Ivy League action on Saturday afternoon. Dartmouth was led by Koch who tallied two goals and two assists for four points with the Big Green having five other goal scorers. Freshman Fergus Campbell posted nine saves and took the loss and was relieved by senior Pat Marshall in the second half. Marshall made five saves in his 25 minutes of play.
SENIOR DAY
The Dartmouth men's lacrosse team will be honoring 11 seniors on Saturday. The group includes: captain Tim Daniels, captain Jonathan Livadas, captain Brian Koch, captain Doug Rendall, Martin Bernstein, Philip Killian, Kyle Lagratta, Pat Marshall, John Mattimore, Tim McVeigh, Jimmy Mullen and Ted Newhouse.
AGAINST RANKED TEAMS
This will be Dartmouth's sixth contest against ranked opponents this season and third consecutive game against the top competition. The Big Green is 0-5 against the top teams in the nation. Dartmouth's first game against a ranked opponent came at Notre Dame vs. the eighth-ranked Fighting Irish. The Big Green fell 19-7 in the matchup in its second game of the season. Other top teams include losses against Brown, Duke and most recently Cornell, Virginia and Princeton. Dartmouth has been outscored 91-40 in those games with each opponent reaching double-digits. Last week the Big Green fell at No. 4 Princeton by a score of 14-7 and the Tigers opened up a 10-0 lead into the third quarter.
SENIOR LEADER
Senior captain Brian Koch leads the Big Green with 32 points on a team-high 24 goals and eight assists after a four-point game week at Princeton. At Scully-Fahey Field, he has posted 11 goals and three assists for 14 points, while 11 of his goals have come on the road. Nine of the 22 goals came in two games. On April 7 against Providence he tallied a team-high four goals and added an assist for five points in the 8-4 win. He netted a season-high five goals against Bryant in the 12-9 loss back on Feb. 24. Koch reached the top-10 list for Dartmouth's all-time leading scorers against Cornell on April 11 with a goal and an assist. He currently has 150 points in his career and he has jumped to No. 6 all-time in goals with 101 in his career.
SUSSMAN COMING ON
Sophomore Ari Sussman has been one the most productive players on the Big Green squad this season. He has tallied at least a point in 10-of-12 games played this year. He got his season-high five-game point streak snapped on Saturday at Princeton. He streak including a four-point game against Yale in the 14-13 overtime win with two goals and two assists. This season, Sussman has tallied double-digit points in six games.
ROOKIE SAVE-IOR
Freshman netminder Fergus Campbell has stepped in as the Big Green's top goaltender since earning the start against Brown on March 21. He made 10 saves against Brown in the 14-8 loss, but followed that performance with his first collegiate victory in a 10-9 win over Holy Cross. Campbell made 13 stops in the win and with a career-high 17 saves against 10th-ranked Duke he earned Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors. He has been credited with double-digit saves in five of his nine starts this season. He is currently second in the Ivy League with 10.56 saves per game.
CONSISTENCY AT MIDFIELD
Senior Jimmy Mullen has been productive this season for the Big Green with 15 goals and three assists for 18 points, which is third on the team. He was named Ivy League Player of the Week on Feb. 23 after tallying four goals, including the game-winner in an 11-10 overtime victory over Hartford in the season opener. He followed that performance with two goals against Bryant in the first loss of the year. He leads the team with four multi-goal games this season, including three against No. 10 Duke on March 28.
FACE-OFF CAROUSEL
The Big Green has had seven different players in the X this season with senior Tim Daniels leading the way with 105 opportunities, winning 54 of those face-offs for a .505 winning percentage, but he has been absent from the face-off dot in the last few games. Mullen has also taken his share of face-offs with 22 wins in the X, while classmate Kyle Lagratta has recently become Dartmouth's top guy and has won 55-of-117 draws. Lagratta has been the most successful lately with 12 wins in 15 chances against Providence on April 7. At Virginia, he went up against former teammate Chad Gaudet and won 11-of-19 draws against the Cavaliers No. 1 man in the X. Last weekend against Princeton, her won eight draws in 18 opportunities.
SCOUTING THE CRIMSON
For No. 19/18 Harvard (7-5, 2-3 Ivy League), Jeff Cohen leads the way with 38 points on 31 goals and seven assists and has tallied a team-best five man-up goals. Dean Gibbons (19-6-25), Jason Duboe (11-8-19), Travis Burr (15-2-17), Jesse Fehr (6-11-17), Max Motschwiller (9-4-13), Kevin Vaughan (5-6-11) and Nick Sapia (6-4-10) have all reached double digits in points. Nick Smith paces the team with 50 ground balls, while Eric Posner has 32. Sam Slaughter (25), Andrew Parchman (23) and Max Gottschall (21) are close behind. Parchman leads the way with 60 face-off victories, while Christian Oberbeck has 58. In net, Joe Pike sports a 6.88 goals-against average and has stopped 99-of-178 shots faced (.556). He owns a 7-5 record on the season. Harvard is outscoring opponents, 129-82, this season and has outshot teams, 447-330. The Crimson has won 134-of-245 face-offs (.518) and has been successful on 192-of-232 clear attempts (.828). Harvard also also tallied 13 man-up goals on 35 chances (.371) and boasts a .816 success rate on man-down chances (31 of 38).
SERIES HISTORY
Harvard and Dartmouth have played 80 times in men's lacrosse with the Crimson holding a close, 42-36-1, advantage. However, the Big Green has taken five of the last six meetings between the schools, including a 12-6 victory last season on May 3.
