HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth men's lacrosse team announced its 2009 team award winners at the Big Green's annual team banquet earlier this month.
The Tom Dent Award, which is given to the most valuable player was awarded to senior
Jimmy Mullen (Mt. Lebanon, Pa.). Mullen was a key player for the Big Green at midfield all season long and with junior
Ari Sussman (New Haven, Conn.) out in the first part of the season, he had to step up and provide offense for Dartmouth. Mullen finished with 15 goals and three assists for 18 points this season. He was named Ivy League Player of the Week back on Feb. 23. He scored four goals in the season opener against Hartford, including the game-winner with six seconds left in overtime to give the Big Green an 11-10 win. He carried the offense with six goals and an assist in the first three games and he ended up posting five multi-goal games.
Senior captain
Doug Rendall (Langhorne, Pa.) earned the Inaugural Class of 1980 Award. Rendall was a defensive midfielder for the Big Green as he appeared in 15 games and started his lone game of the season against Harvard on Senior Day. He tallied his only goal of the season in the opener at Hartford on Feb. 21. Rendall also picked up eight ground balls in his 15 games played. Rendall was also given the Blue Collar Award.
The Dud Hendrick Award, which is awarded to the most improved player on the Big Green, was given to sophomore
Jack Steele (Longmeadow, Mass.) after Steele tallied three goals and an assist for four points in his 11 games played. The year before as a freshman, Steele posted just one goal in three games played. Two of his goals this season came against Providence on April 7 in an 8-4 for the Big Green over the Friars.
Freshman
Fergus Campbell (New Canaan, Conn.) was voted the team's most outstanding freshman as he earned the Jenkins Marshall Award. Campbell started nine goals for the Big Green between the pipes in his first campaign. He moved into the starting role after beginning the season as the third goaltender and earned two wins as a freshman. He recorded an 11.88 goals against average and a .482 save percentage. Campbell posted double-digit saves in five games this past season and made nine starts, which was the most by a Dartmouth goaltender this year.
Senior captain Jon Livadas (Wilmington, Del.) was named the recipient of the Dedication and Sacrifice Award as voted on by his teammates. Livadas was sidelined with a serious leg injury in the beginning of the year, which caused him to miss multiple games. He returned against his brother and Cornell on April 11 and scored a man-up goal and he also tallied a man-up goal at Virginia on April 18.
The offensive MVP went to senior captain
Brian Koch (Rye, N.Y.), who tallied a team-high 26 goals and 35 points in 15 games played with 13 starts. He also led the team with eight man-up goals. He became the sixth Dartmouth player to reach 100 goals in a career and is fifth all-time with 103 scores. His career total of 155 points which puts him seventh all-time in points. Koch's eight man-up goals led the Big Green and was second in the Ivy League.
The defensive MVP went to junior
Andy Gagel (Houston, Texas). Once again Gagel was a consistent player for the Big Green, playing and starting in all 15 games. It was his third-consecutive season in which he had started all games. He grabbed a career-high 34 ground balls. The final award was the Coaches Award, which was given to
Mike Wiedman (Allison Park, Pa.).
