PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Dartmouth field hockey team dropped its second contest of the season after an hour weather delay as the Big Green fell, 4-0, to Providence on Friday night.
For Dartmouth (0-2), sophomore Meagan Vakiener (Port Murray, N.J.) made 10 stops in net with five in each half.
Providence (2-2) had four different goal scorers, including Julie Ruggieri who posted a game-high three points with a goal and an assist.
In the first half, the Friars jumped out to an early 2-0 lead through the first 15 minutes of play. Senior defender Kerianne Murphy scored her first collegiate goal to get things started at the 12:36 mark. She carried the ball into the circle and found the back of the cage, unassisted, with a hard shot from the right side.
At the 14:52 mark, senior Nellie Poulin notched her fifth goal of the season to give the Friars a 2-0 advantage. Poulin collected a pass from junior Ruggieri at the right post and beat Vakiener.
The Friars added another two scores in the second half to make the final, 4-0. Senior Ali Shover struck at 56:04 as she dribbled into the circle and beat the keeper, unassisted. Ruggieri rounded out the scoring at 65:47 as she beat a pack of defenders into the circle and slipped it into the cage.
Providence outshot the Big Green, 24-7, and held the advantage in penalty corners, 5-1.
The Big Green will be back in action on the road this Sunday as Dartmouth travels to Holy Cross for a 2 p.m. start.
