Hanover, N.H. - Daniel Keat (Wellington, New Zealand) played a role in all three goals as the #18 Dartmouth men's soccer team turned in a dominant 3-1 win over Vermont tonight.
The Big Green (5-2-1) snapped a two-game skid in impressive fashion, outshooting the Catamounts (0-6-3), 23-4.
After a back and forth start to the game, Dartmouth began attacking in earnest and Vermont had little answer except for the play of goalie Tom Critz, who finished with six saves and multiple picked off crosses. It was the Dartmouth defense, however, that had to make the first big play of the game. Vermont's T.J. Gore fired from the right side and rookie keeper Sean Donovan (Burr Ridge, Ill.) made the save but lost the ball. Senior defender Pumi Maqubela (Andover, Mass.) managed to clear the ball before Vermont could get to the open goal.
The Big Green broke through in the 17th minute with a beautiful goal from sophomore Lucky Mkosana (Bulwayo, Zimbabwe), who celebrated his birthday today. Keat played the ball to senior Craig Henderson (Wellington, New Zealand), who one-timed it to Mkosana who then unleashed an arcing shot from the top of the box for a 1-0 Green lead.
Just over four minutes later, Dartmouth picked up its second goal of the game and it was a memorable one by Henderson. Junior Austin Bowers (Old Greenwich, Conn.) fed the ball to Keat, who sent a perfect cross into the box where Henderson leapt, nearly horizontal for a beautiful header to put the Big Green up, 2-0.
Dartmouth entered halftime having outshot Vermont, 13-3. Donovan made two saves in the half to keep the Catamounts off the board.
There were some fireworks in the second half as the two New England rivals continued to battle fiercely despite Dartmouth's clear advantage. The Big Green capitalized for goal number three after Keat was taken down in the box. He made good on his third penalty kick goal of the season, now 3-3 overall, with a high rocket to make it 3-0 in the 63rd minute.
Vermont managed to get on the board in the 74th minute when Rem Kielman sent a long free kick through the Dartmouth wall after a defensive miscue. A leaping Donovan was unable to make the stop, taking the score to 3-1.
The Big Green buckled down - that wound up the Catamounts' only shot of the period - and cruised to the 3-1 win. 21 Dartmouth players saw action in the victory.
Dartmouth has a quick turnaround before it opens its Ivy League title defense against Princeton at Burnham Field on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 6:30 p.m.
