HANOVER, N.H. - Head coach Andrew Towers and the Dartmouth men's lacrosse team has announced its 13-game slate for the upcoming season, which features three of last year's final four teams and an Ivy League Tournament for the first time.
Towers begins his first season as Dartmouth's head coach after five years as an assistant coach. This season he is joined by new top assistant Jon Torpey, who comes to Hanover from Denver after spending four years with the Pioneers.
The schedule looks a bit different for the Big Green. For the first time in the history of Ivy League lacrosse, the seven schools will be fighting for the top four spots to participate in an Ancient Eight Tournament, which will determine who gets the automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
But before the tournament, Dartmouth will play a total of 13 games on its schedule with only five games on the turf at Scully-Fahey Field, while eight come on the road. The Big Green will face five teams that reached the NCAA Tournament last season and four of them will come on the road. Towers mentioned that the road-heavy schedule will not be a problem for the Big Green.
“These guys have invested a tremendous amount of time and energy into their preparation for the upcoming season,” said Towers. “I am very confident that whether the game is on the road or at home they will be ready to compete and won't allow excuses to become part of the equation.”
The season kicks off with two Patriot League opponents as the Big Green hits the road on Feb. 27 to face Colgate and returns home for the season-opener at Scully-Fahey Field against Holy Cross at 4 p.m. on March 9. Two days later, Wagner treks into Hanover for the first time at 6 p.m. on March 11.
Dartmouth then hits the road for its annual spring trip with big matchups against national powers North Carolina and Duke. The Big Green will be facing the Tar Heels for the 11th time and the first time since 2007. The Blue Devils have seen Dartmouth the past three seasons and for the first time in two years, the teams will not be playing a neutral site game. The game at UNC is set for March 19 at 7 p.m., while the game in Durham will be at the same time on March 23.
The Big Green returns to the Northeast on March 27 for the first Ivy League game of the season in Cambridge against Harvard to kick off a four-game Ivy League slate. This will be a change of pace for Dartmouth as the two schools have not faced off in an Ivy opener since 1992. The Ivy schedule continues back at Scully-Fahey Field as last year's national runner-up Cornell makes a visit on April 3 for a 1 p.m. start.
Dartmouth plays its second conference game in a row a week later as Yale makes the trip north on April 10. The Big Green is back on the road for the next two contests with an Ivy showdown on April 17 at Princeton, followed by a border battle with Vermont in Burlington on April 20.
The final home game of the season comes on April 24 against Penn with a 1 p.m. start at Scully-Fahey Field. The Big Green then will wrap up its season on the road in Rhode Island. First up is a non-conference battle with Bryant on April 27, followed by the final Ivy game of the year at Brown on May 1.
Then for the first time the top four teams in the Ivy League will enter into a tournament that will be played at the top seed on May 7 with two semifinal matchups. The conference championship will take place a day later on May 9.
